Christmas in Guanajuato

Would like to write an article on traditional Xmas celebrations in Mexico. Would Guanajuato be a good destination in that respect, and if so, what is there to do that is worth mentioning and how can I participate?

If you google "Posadas Mexicanas" you will find lots of information about these processions that begin on Dec 16th. I don't know how big they are in Guanajuato, but I am sure local DE, Cindi, will be able to elaborate when she next comes on. You might also want to research why poinsettias are called 'noche buena' (Christmas Eve) in Spanish. They are native to Mexico.

Aside from that, Christmas in Mexico is a largely family affair and the holiday period therefore quite quiet.

Hi groengras,

As Londinense said, Christmas in Mexico is largely a family affair. Christmas Day is very quiet with little going on.

The posadas are generally neighborhood/extended family events. You may be able to find information about the posadas posted in the churches around town. The tourist office or the reception staff at your hotel may also have information.

The posadas begin on December 16th and last for nine days through December 24th. Many people go to Mass on Christmas Eve, then gather at home or at a relative's home for a big meal that lasts well into the night.

If you can arrive in Mexico before December 12th, you'll be able to take part in the festivities for Our Lady of Guadalupe, Mexico's patron saint. In Guanajuato, there are nightly processions up the Calzada de Guadalupe (a street) to the church of Our Lady of Guadalupe at the top of the mountain. These begin on December 1st and continue through December 12th, the actual saint's day.
