 swine flu?

My wife and I are scheduled to travel to PV at the end of May.

I bought travel insurance and can opt-out up to 48 hours prior to our travel if I need to. This is not something I want to do.

I am well-aware that the media does it's best to sensationalize things but must admit this does have me concerned.

Are things in PV any different as a result of the outbreak?

Please use the search button. There are about 15 threads on this already. PV is fine. Far away from the problem.

Actually PV isn't far away from the problem, and they just closed restaurants and clubs in the last several hours, for one week.

I haven't heard of cases in PV - but there are 18 unconfirmed in the state it is in, as of yesterday. So I think they're just being careful.

I'm traveling to PV tomorrow - one friend is prob backing out, my other friend and I both think this is overblown. We've been watching the news etc. all weekend... we're just going to be very careful while there, and we weren't looking to party anyway.

Here is where I read that.

Destination Expert   What's this?
for Puerto Vallarta

Only nighclubs have been closed, not restaurants at this point.

Oh, thank you for letting me know that.

I just heard night clubs only also, but one guy who is in PV said both. Another said just night clubs though. I can't find anything in the news yet, must be too early.

But since I'm leaving tomorrow, nightclubs being closed doesn't matter to me but the restaurants... that would not be cool.

Dear dbk51,

I live in Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico and so far so good!

As you probably know in major cities, especially Mexico City, The Mexican government is treating this as an very important matter and closing public locations (museums, churches, etc.)

As of the evening of April 26, the Associated Press reported "...the State of Jalisco, in which Puerto Vallarta is located, have no confirmed cases..."

I recommend monitoring reliable news sources like the Associated Press (www.ap.org), the US Centers for Disease Control (www.CDC.gov) and the World Health Organization (www.who.int)

You did things the right way with trip insurance! Relatively speaking, the end of May is a long way away. Since you have a 48 hour cancellation window, you have plenty of time to gather information, watch the situation and make an informed decision. With luck this will quiet down quickly and you can enjoy the beauty and tranquillity of Puerto Vallarta in May!

Dear Jeffrey,

Thanks for the links.

I bought the trip insurance for fear of either me or my wife being laid-off. I booked the trip (5/16-5/24) back in January.

About a month later, we both learned that our jobs are secure (thank God), but around that time the media really began to sensationalize the drug-realted problems many of the border areas were facing.

People whom we know would either call or write saying "Don't go to Mexico!". We then had to patiently explain that while Puerto Vallarta is in Mexico, it is quite far away from the areas where many of the problems are occuring. Also, many of those who have commented onour destination have NO clue that these problems have been happening for some time.

I really want to be able to take this trip in few weeks. We absolutely love PV and this will be our second trip there. I have been looking forward to this since the Fall when we realized that we would be fortunate enough to be able to take a late-spring vacation. I have no interest in going to Hawaii, the Carribean or anywhere else. I want PV!

The panic is now everywhere and the media will continue to feed off of it. I could just as easily contract this flu here in Chicago. My wife said she saw people on the EL this morning wearing masks.

Anyway, sorry for the rant.

I appreciate the links and will keep my eyes open.

I'd say go on the trip, wash your hands frequently and be cautious. I'd go to PV today if I could. How many people die of second hand smoke? I agree with another poster..."living in fear is fearing to live."

we are going to PV May 14 for 4 days then travelling to Sayulita for another 5 days. My wife is 6 months pregnant and we are very concerned. If she wasn't pregnant, this wouldn't be such a big worry. I know everyone says that it should be fine. But would you take your 6 month pregnant wife??
