You can wander around residential neighborhoods in the evenings. If you're lucky you'll spot people playing in their living rooms, on their patios, in Ma & Pa restaurants, etc.

For listening, I really enjoy Beverly & Willow the jazz duo at The River Cafe.

For mariachi groups, sunset along Playa Los Muertos (beach) seems to have the most opportunities.

The Malecon weekend evenings, you'll usually catch something.

None of these (except the first suggestion) is exactly off the beaten path.

If you ever have the opportunity to visit Guadalajara a must is an evening at Mariachi Plaza in El Centro. A number of cafe/bars with several competing bands makes for a wonderful experience!

..Peddler..I would love to go its in september time that they all parade in the streets....

seaangler, I filmed the Mariachi band at La Chata when I was there in January. It was filmed off of my hubby's digital camera so the quality isn't so great...but we really enjoy listening to them. They normally start around 8:45 to 9:00 pm and if you go, ask them to play "Mariachi Loco"...that is the song that we filmed.

We'll check out the place you mention. Another place we always go for Mariachi, is Mariacho Loco, and we'll go there again as well. Over the years, we've happened on small (maybe 3 guys) playing in little places and enjoyed it so much... so that's kind of what we were hopping for. It recent years, though, it seems like whenever we run into little groups like that they're more roaming around the area and play per song. That's O.K. with us too. We enjoy doing that at Burros Bar right on the beach. My hope was that there was some kind of regular entertainment, other than Mariachi, anywhere that we might go check out. Any more help would be appreciated.
