Yes we definitely have thoughts...go to Maz and enjoy your trip. This was a totally different situation than what you have and in a totally different environment.. It appears by the news reports today that much of what was reported previously was distorted and the truth is unfolding.

You might want to compare this to going to Cowboys In Calgary on a Saturday nite and expecting nothing to happen. Not suggesting that people get killed at Cowboys, but it has much the same atmosphere and age group as the Club they were at in Aca. Put THAT many people into any club or bar and expect no one to be drunk and expect no one to fight is unrealistic. That is not to say that it is OK that this young man died and I am not saying that he WAS fighting but it is a recipe for something to happen. No one goes there and expects to die.

However, I dont expect that you intend to go to a club and get drunk with your children so the situation is somewhat different than what I imagine your trip is intended to be.

I think we all need to calm down and let the facts unfold and it appears that they will be unfolding soon. The autopsy has been completed in Ontario and the parents have requested that it not be released to the public...yet.

I agree totally with golfinfool. You have no worries of this sort in Mazatlan...ever! Even the clubs in the Golden Zone that are oriented toward this age group have never had occurrences of this sort. Mazatlan is way too laid back!

Just ask yourself this question. How many Canadians were killed in Mexico in the last year? Then ask....How many Canadians were killed in Canada last year? Now, which do you think is safer?

Mazatlan is as safe as any city in North America of like size. Use common sense like you would in Calgary and you'll be just fine. By the way, I visited Calgary during the stampede last year and was not afraid for a second :-) Course I didn't ride any of those bulls either.

We have been living here in Mazatlan for the past 10 years and have never had any experience with any sort of violence whatsoever. Wish I could say that about our hometown of St. Louis, MO.

tourists being killed is a reality in some parts of this world. yes there are victims of crime in all countries. some countries produce better stats than others, but we all take risks in the many of our experiences dont we. yes be informed, read the travel advisory page on the cdn govt site, do take care. i wouldnt worry poolmom specifically about travel to mazatlan. now some places on the other hand i wouldnt encourage travel to. many more of us than not travel to tourist destinations in mexico and return home without incident. xo

I fell safer at 2 a.m. in Mazatlan than at 2 p.m. in Portland, Tacoma or Seattle.

....if I were a foreigner coming to Canada for the first time and were given the Edmonton Journal on the plane to read I would not get off the plane but yet we do not say "don't come to Canada due to violence"

Everytime a tourist is killed in Mexico everyone makes a big deal about it...but when there're another murder here in Canada we don't blink an eye because it "the norm" ...we read about a new murder everyday in the papers.

....just my opinion
