My son was evacuated from his room early this am due to a fire in one of the towers. Have any locals heard anything about the extent of the fire?

This won't answer your question with any specificity - but the news has already hit the internet.

My daughter was evacuated too and student city will not give us any straight answers. My daughter has told me she has lost all of her belongings and they are sitting on the sidewalk not allowed back into the hotel.

Kim 1:00 pm est

I just heard from my daughter about a half hour ago. They are transporting them to a club nearby and then they (studentcity) are going to try to find new accomodations for them. Now that I know she is safe, what about their belongings: passport, money, clothes, etc? They can't get out of Mexico without a passport. I am nervous now about looters!!!!

I just spoke with the american embassy in Acapulco the students are still outside and there is no word if and when they will be able to get back into the hotel. They said looters are a possibility and they cannot prevent that. But they are sending someone over from the embassy to check on the students and reassure them that things will be ok......it is still chaotic down there though.

Our daughter was on the 5th floor. It was pitch black with thick smoke. She crawled down the hall with a wet towel over her and made it to safety. She is there with a group of her friends from the University of Maryland. Have any of you heard as to whether or not the fire alarms went off?

My son just called . He is at the airport (was due to leave this morning ) and was allowed back into his room for his belongings. He was in the tower that wasn't on fire , no news on anyone getting into the other tower yet.

my brother called me early this morning... he said NO fire alarms went off. However, he was not in the tower with the fire. He's been outside since at least 8am (eastern time). He was supposed to leave last night, their flight was cancelled, and are now supposed to leave tonight, but can't get into their hotel to get their stuff. Their first flight leaving philadelphia was also cancelled. StudentCity is awful.

Just spoke to my daughter who was on the 17th floor in the tower with the fire. They woke up coughing, with thick black smoke. No fire alarms went off!!! They had packed the night before, and somehow made it down 17 flights of stairs with their suitcases. They got into a cab at 5 am (2 pm flight) and just went to the airport. Some stuff left behind, but all have their passports. At the airport now awaiting her flight.

Thank god according to a previous post that there were no injuries.
