Malaysian visiting Tijuana - US Visa?

I am a Malaysian scheduled for Tijuana for 2 weeks in late April 2010. My reason for travelling is to escort my wife who will be there on business.

I don't have a US Visa. Is an American visa required if one were to fly direct to Mexico, bypassing US airports? Is it very difficult to get a Mexican tourist visa if one is currently in-between jobs? What airline flies there from Kuala Lumpur?

Thanks a lot.

You need a Mexican visa which you should be able to obtain from the Mexican embassy in KL. Assuming your wife has proof of a job in Mexico this should not be difficult - call them for details.

If your plane lands in the U.S. then you need a U.S. visa but otherwise not.

Most flight routes will take you via the U.S. - the only direct flight from Asia to Mexico that I know of is from Tokyo (on Aeromexico) so you could get to Tokyo and then fly to Mexico city and then fly to Tijuana. You would have to buy one ticket to get to Tokyo and then another on AeroMexico to get to Tijuana (via Mexico City). It is a VERY long trip and will be expensive.

The only other way is to fly from Europe and get a flight direct to Mexico City from there.

Hi;

If your Malaysian fly schedule does transit in USA. airport,

You still Do not require a USA. Visa Unless the passenger

wants to get through the Custom for a city visit.

tratnguyen1 - no, that is not true. It used to be possible but not after 9/11. For example you can read wikitravel.org/en/Avoiding_a_transit_of_the_… which states:

# Anyone arriving into the United States or one of its territories (like Puerto Rico) and not covered by the Visa Waiver Program requires at least a C-1 transit visa to transit the airport. This can be expensive (US$131 minimum) and time-consuming to obtain, and you can be denied the visa: the requirements are the same as the full B-2 tourist visa. If you arrive without this visa, even for a fuel stop or transit, and aren't eligible for a waiver, you will be sent home and recorded as having been denied entry to the US.

# The United States does not allow sterile transit, which means that even if you have an immediate connecting flight, you have to pass through Customs and Immigration. This is time-consuming and tedious (4 hours or more is recommended to be safe), and all travellers transiting in the USA using either a transit visa or the Visa Waiver Program will be photographed and fingerprinted.

Hi;

Sorry for this New Requirements by the US. Custom and Immigrations.

I always Thought the Transit passengers Do Not need a Visa because

they merely take a short landing and get onto their next destination out

the US. soil. I travel to SE.Asia and Get through Taipei, HK, without Visa

when Do the landing transit to another country. Just Sit and wait for

the next fly No Custom check in the trasit lounge.

Yes, no problems in most countries but for the U.S. anyone landing has to clear immigration and customs even if getting a flight out of the country in the next hour or two.

Hi;

There are many Airliners serving the SE.Asia to the USA. and the tickets

at reasonnable price. For Mexico , I only think the transit in Vancouver

by Cathay Pacific or Eva airline . In any case, the trip is very long and expensive from K.L to T.J.

Better route is KL. to LAX and TJ. However, a USA visa is required

Your most economic and least heavy route to Tijuana is via Los Angeles (I'd rest one night in Los Angeles and then use land transportation to TIJ; about $1.000.00 savings). If you search hotels.com or any other engines you will find the different options and fares. Any option you pick you will need either a TRANSIT or a TOURIST VISA for your stop in the USA and you will need a TOURIST or BUSINESS COMPANION VISA (requested by your wife at the Mexican Embassy) to enter Mexico.

Hurry up! I don't know how fast the US Visas are given in Malaysia but in Mex you need to apply with three months of anticipation!!!

Hi;

For a 3 months waiting time USA visa application, You may well off

paying extra 1,000usd for a different route from KL to T.J.

9. Re: Malaysian visiting Tijuana - US Visa?

Thanks everybody for all your help.

For a Mexican visa, as I am currently unemployed, I will have to provide a letter from my wife's office confirming that I will be escorting her for 2 weeks. The Embassy will also need to see my marriage certificate.

The most likely routes are either transiting from Amsterdam or Toyko to Mexico City and then by bus to Tijuana.

Thanks once again.

The last leg you will probably find quicker (the bus is 17 hours) and cheaper by air (www.volaris.com.mx). Anyway, hope it all works out for you!
