Live from the Riu Palace Costa Rica

We will be here until Saturday, Jauary 12th, so feel free to ask questions - I'll answer unless I drift off into vacation land, LOL

Checked in around 4:30 yesterday, January 5th and am happy to report that the extreme overcrowding from noon Friday until noon Sunday that so many have mentioned is not in evidence - not at the pools or at the Arenal last night (main buffet restaurant) Evidently they stopped doing that. So far, we had dinner at the Arenal last night - food ok, not spectacular, though very clean, well presented and lots of variety. Better than some all-inclusives, worse than some. This is our 15th time at an AI - everything from 3 star to AAA 5 diamond, all over Mexico and the Caribbean.

Reservation system to get into the "specialty restaurants" is definitely in place. We got there around 11 this morning and were not able to get in to anything for tonight, but have reservations at 8:15 in Krystal for tomorrow. They won't let us book any farther ahead than tomorrow.....Planning to try the Italian tonight. This looks pretty restrictive as others have said, will see how this goes.

They do have room service, but the menu is very limited and sadly breakfast is not on it :-( One page, basically soups, salads and pastries.

No problem getting on the internet - they gave us codes, as many as we wanted, one for each device, service has been working so far.

I can see why families traveling with kids would not like the layout of the room - lack of privacy except in the toilet, but for us as a couple, thats not a problem at all. Also - we live in a modern condo in a high rise in downtown Dallas and like the decor - very modern but also colorful, lots of ocean/jungle themes in the art.

More later!

Maybe there is no wildlife since they destroyed all the habitat to built the resort... :(

Hi All - TONS of monkeys!! - very active in the mornings, early!!Just a little way down the beach- not far at all - there are LOTS of them - so cute!! Lots of birds - we asked for a room facing the jungle to see and hear more wildlife and to get away from the noise of the evening entertainment, and we really don't hear the entertainment at night from the room. Entertainment is pretty good, food good - Krystal was quite good, the reservation system is annoying, getting there at 9 there were already 25 or 30 people in line and only one person taking reservations.... steakhouse was not great, I had the surf and turf which was good, my husband had the ribeye which was well cooked but seriously like 1/4 inch thick, and the service in there was quite slow, so probably won't go back. Italian was good. We took a river tour today which was kinda a long day but really interesting - howler and white faced monkeys lots of crocs, birds - roseate spoonbills very pretty - tons of wildlife. The gym is small but adequate - just machines - like 3 sets of little dumbells otherwise, no real weights to speak of, casino likewise - small but OK - some slots, blackjack, roulette, thats about it. Live entertainment in there last night - OK, not great. Arenal buffet tonight was really good - tons of HUGE shrimp, ceviche - I guess it was seafood night. Internet has been spotty - VERY spotty from the room - I'm in the lobby now, just ran into a guy on the elevator who was complaining about spotty internet - hope they get that worked out LOL
