Safety / Accessibility in Nassau, Bahamas

A few friends and I are planning a trip to Nassau from the states. we are thinking about renting a house instead of staying at an all inclusive hotel/resort.

will it be safe? will there be grocery stores? are activities pretty accessible? we're planning on being just west of cable beach.

any suggestions would be much appreciated.

It depends how far west of Cable Beach you are. The main attraction at Cable Beach is the beach (duh!) behind the Radisson/Wyndham/Nassau Beach Hotels. Second is probably the casino at the Wyndham, called the Crystal Palace. As you go east towards the downtown area of Nassau, you pass Arawak Cay, which is where the famous 'fish fry' is and Ardastra Gardens, which is a very nice, quaint zoo. Once in downtown there is mostly tourist shopping, including the Straw Market. There is some nightlife at the Cable Beach hotels, depending on your age and what you're looking for. NBH younger, Radisson older. If you are well west, you will need the #10 bus, which runs all day from about 6am-6pm for $1. Otherwise you will need a taxi to get around.

The island is very safe as long as you act like you would in any big US city. Don't travel alone at night, don't hang out in areas where there isn't much activity, etc.
