Restaurants w/in walking Distance from Caneel Bay? |
|
After much research, we decided to stay at Caneel Bay. Since our vacation budget has been blown on the room, we're hoping to make it into town most of the nights for dinner. Is it possible to walk from Caneel Bay into town without putting ourselves in jeapordy? We are a late-20's couple from Manhattan, so a one to 1 1/2 mile walk isn't a big deal on the way to dinner, or after a big lunch. Report as inappropriate |

I would not suggest walking on the road from Caneel into town, particularly at night. To many curves, too many blind corners, too many hills, and too many tourists driving on a side of the road they are not used to driving on. Please try to scrape up enough cash to rent a car! You will be glad you did. Cabs are expensive and inconsistent...though from Caneel into town they are only about $5 bucks or so per person each way. The car would pay for itself by giving you the freedom to explore the rest of the island at will. Report as inappropriate

I agree with ACB b/c it is dangerous and also there are very steep hills..find some cash and rent a car u wont regret it!! Report as inappropriate

Hi Yes, taxis are always waiting in the Caneel parking lot, making it very easy to get to/from town (where the good eats are...Lime Inn, Stone Terrace, La Tapa, Fish Trap...and definitely Asolare, just out of town - closer to Caneel). I would almost suggest getting a car to explore the island yourselves...however...the best thing about staying at Caneel (other than the complimentary bottle of rum in the room & the high thread count sheets) are the gorgeous (gorgeous) practically-deserted beaches amongst the beautiful grounds. You're paying for them...and it's kind of difficult to leave them (we could only pry ourselves away for a great snorkel trip to Waterlemon Cay one day). Hope I haven't confused you too much! Enjoy your trip - St. John is wonderful. PS...in order to maximize beach time, buy some bug stuff called 'Repel' (actually smells good) in the Caneel store...pesky mosquitoes like to feast on some humans as the sun starts to set. It is not a very pleasant walk. No sidewalk, curvy and cars rushing past you. I'm in great shape and would not do it. Report as inappropriate
