Favorite Airline to the Islands |
|
My wife and I are coming for a week in July and I've been watching the fares from LAX to STT for a long time. I'm not seen much difference in costs when flying the times we are planning to go (an overnight flight to arrive in STT in the early afternoon). So are there any favorite airlines of the seasoned travelers out there? Delta, United, American, Spirit, etc.? I've been warned to avoid Miami and P.R. as stops to STT. Any advise to someone who will be flying from the West Coast? Thanks for the advice.... Mike |

Hello Fellow Californian! We have used American for the last 3 trips to STT. We are also going to STJ in July. This year we are taking Delta. I like the connections better. We fly out of SFO and also take a overnight flight. It seems that American likes to go through San Juan a lot and it is always a mess. We also took the route of SFO to JFK in New York then to STT, had problems with that one also. We are going from SFO to Atlanta to STT on Delta hopefully no problems this time. I have heard people have lots of problems on Spirit but we have never used them. I also heard that US Airways is good to STT. Hope this helps! Let me know if you need any other info. STJ is wonderful, it is worth any of the problems that you might have with the airlines. Good Luck! Laura

We always take American. We actually love San Juan as a stop as the restaurants there already FEEL like you are on vacation. No problems the last 4 trips.

We always choose to go through San Juan rather than Miami. San Juan makes the connections much easier in our experience. We ususally choose American for the airline.

Can anyone be more specific about why to avoid the Miami connection? Also, does anyone have advice on flight times? If we take the morning flight from the West Coast and arrive in the evening, will we be able to catch the ferry to St. John that late? Or should we try the red-eye? Thanks!

CaliforniaBeachbum11, It truly is what you want to do. We don't like traveling from CA in the morning because by the time you get to STJ you have wasted a whole day. We fly out at night around 10:00 or 11:00 p.m. and get to STT around 1:00 or 2:00 p.m. the next day. The thing about San Juan and American is if you fly in the summer months they cancel flights because of weather or lack of customers flying. The problem with Miami is usually weather causing problems with the flights. Coming from CA you have more stops if you want a cheaper price on the ticket. So you may stop in Miami and San Juan. It just depends on when you are coming and what you want to do. I think it is great the all the other posters have not had any problems, I just know that we have. Hope this helps.

Delta works best for me thru Atlanta! I get in about 2:00 and fly out about 3:00 get home same day!

We're obviously flying from different places, but when we traveled in February, we drove to Chicago O'Hare, spent the night, and flew direct on United from ORD to STT, leaving ORD at 8:20 AM and arriving in STT at 3 PM (which is 1 PM Central time). We loved the fact that it was a direct flight and no hassles whatsoever. I would personally choose flying thru San Juan rather than Miami. San Juan is a smaller airport and American Airlines does a good job (it's their Caribbean hub). There are lots of flights, so if you do get cancelled, there's usually another one within a brief time. With Miami, it seems like they get those afternoon showers and then close the ramps, forcing lots of delays. It's also a much bigger airport, much less accomodating than San Juan.

Two people in my party are flying LAX to STT on Spirit Air. I believe the price was about $450 RT!! The leave on Friday night around 11 LA time and arrive in STT at 1 p.m. on Saturday. There is a layover in Ft. Lauderdale.

I was worried about flying through Miami on our way to STT last June after reading so many negative posts but we had no problems, there was a fair amount of walking but we had more than enough time to make our connecting flight.
