Gallows vs. Estate Lindholm |
|
We are coming to St. John in June and can't decide between Gallows and Estate Lindholm. We are in our mid 20s and enjoy snorkeling and exploring. |
|
Though I have never stayed at Gallows, I have stayed at Estate Lindholm and really like it there. In fact we will be staying for 2 days in June before we get into our villa. That said I think if I had a choice between the two and if I was staying for more than a couple of days I'd chose Gallows for several reasons. For one thing you have a full kitchen to prepare breakfasts and lunches which is what we like to do when we are on STJ. You can snorkel right there off the property (though I never have but I understand it's good). There is also a pool and hot tub on the property and it's an easy walk to town whereas the walk into town from Estate Lindholm, while doable, is down and then back up a very steep unlit hill with no sidewalk. Gallow gets my vote.

We loved EL. Every night we walked to town and every night we walked back up with a litle flashlight the size of a quarter. Some days we went to town and back twice. On the way down and back up you will pass a scenic overlook and depending on the time you're walking, you'll see the harbor, the sunset, the lights on the ships. Every night when we walked back up we enjoyed the spectacular stars! One night we walked to Gallows and didn't like what we passed as much as the walk to EL. The view from second floor of ZoZos was magical. We also really liked EL's little breakfast every morning which is included in the rate. We had a refrig, micro, coffeemaker, sink, utensils if we had wanted to prepare meals and eat in the room. But for what we saved on room rate, we took sandwiches to the beach from the Grotto Deli (and EL provided the coolers, beach blanket, beach towels, beach chairs, beach umbrella....) and every night we ate out. There is a small pool and we loved the feeling of having it all to ourselves since there are only 10 rooms there. It was such a quiet, peaceful location and atmosphere. One of STJ's best snorkeling beaches is Honeymoon which is a 10 minute walk from EL through the National Park. It was so neat to leave our room on foot, go through the trail, and come out at this gorgeous beach with no buildings around! But, from what I've read on this forum, I don't think you can go wrong with either place!

I have never stayed at EL, but rarely read anything bad about it. That said, we have stayed at Gallow's Point twice and are returning again this June. It is so convenient to walk to Cruz bay for dinner The mini mart on site is nice and the staff are great. You can run a tab for the week. For a little store, they carry quite a bit. They will also make your dinner reservations if you like and have copies of all of the restaurant menus and arrange excursions. I would have to agree that the walk to Gallow's is not a scenic as to EL, but the hill is sure smaller. GP also supplies beach chairs, towels, and a cooler. If you have a more specific question, let me know. Concur you probably can't go wrong with either.

Have stayed at both in the past year. Have to say EL was by far my favorite. The grounds were beautiful and the rooms were great. The staff was extremly couteous and provided many extra perks. Our stay at Gallows Point was ok, it seems to be pretty much hit or miss depending on what unit you're able to reserve. The unit we stayed at was extremly dated and didn't seem to be cleaned very often. On the other hand, EL's fcilities were always emmaculate and stayed that way through-out our entire week. Another thing I also did not like, as much, about Gallow's Point was the location and layout of the property. It is on a point which juts out somewhat into Cruz Bay, however, depending on the time of day, visitors to the property/restaurant and boat traffic can be a bit annoying. I also appreciated the intimate nature of EL. Everyone has there preference. If you are looking for something more boutique, romantic, and private, my choice wouold definitely be EL. Otherwise, I would certainly pick GP over other guest houses or properties such as the Westin. Good luck! - LTJ

Gallows is closer to town and restaurants (by 1/4 mile and a safer walk), has a little store on property with drinks, food and booze with prices that rival the regular grocery stores. Plus, they are full sized condos with kitchens, so you can keep your beer cold. Great for mornings you don't want to rush off, coffee pot, music, hanging on the patio.

Never stayed at EL but did stay at Gallow's. Can't say I've experienced anything better. Not 5-star but a lot of freedom since its a full size condo. We did the Ocean Upper which was beautiful. In the morning i would get a latte from the local Gallows Store (Everyting) and then would go back and cook a nice breakfast (had full kitchen). We would open up the big doors that led to our balcony and enjoy the ocean view and take in the great weather. At night it was literally a 2 minute walk to ZoZo's for dinner or even a drink, for some of the best sunsets on the island. It seemed as if Gallows pretty much had everything we needed for our stay.

Never stayed at Gallows but EL was amazing last spring. Beautiful grounds, great hospitality , quiet and clean. Would be there in a second again
