STT in January (temps and ocean conditions)

We may be coming to Sapphire the week of January 13 and this would be our first visit to STT this early in the year. I've researched the average air and water temps and it looks like January is typically a nice, dry month with decent temps. We'd be taking a couple of excursions on the water, any concerns that time of year?

Also, is there anything going on that week we might want to know of?

Thanks!

CR

We have been going down in January for quite a few years and the weather is pretty much the same as usual. The water might be a tad cooler, but certainly not cold.

The only thing that we have experienced that is unusual is that sometimes the "Christmas Winds" don't know that they shouldn't be hanging around in January, and it can be pretty windy for a day or two.

It really isn't that much of a problem but I guess it could be quite choppy at sea, Also, at Sapphire, the East facing units that get the wind most all the time can be very windy. The buildings facing Northeast usually just get a very comfortable cooling breeze.

We have been enjoying Sapphire in January for over fifty years. We always find that the water is an agreeable temperature, and, even with the "cooling trade winds", the air is always an agreeable temperature if you are dry.

You get uncomfortable i when you first leave the water and those CTWs hit your wet skin. Have a big beach towel and come sort of "cover-up" very convenient to where you will egress the water, and ASAP start getting dry and covered. Then all will be fine.

BTW, isn't "Christmas" a twelve-day holiday?

Seems to maybe be a little confusion about the "Christmas Winds". The Trade winds die down in the summer months, culminating in a main lull August through October. Their return is usually in December and thus they became known as the "Christmas Winds" and they continue through June/July before starting to die down again. Their intensity comes and goes but the norms are gentle, cooling and very pleasant breezes. Water and air temps throughout the islands vary only by a very few degrees between winter and summer.

We have been sailing in Jan. for over 10 years. Weather in Jan. we find perfect. At night might need a very light jacket. Winds keep you comfortable during the day. Water temp is comfortable, only use shorty wet suit if scuba diving. Sleep with no a/c, just hatches open. Usually a 10-15 min. rain shower a day.
