Stay 2 nights in St Thomas or one and one in Tortola?

We are chartering a catamaran Sat. to Sat. out of Road Town in March 2013 but arriving in St. Thomas on Thursday. Flight into St. thomas is too late to get the ferry. Do you suggest one night in St. Thomas and one night in Tortola -- or two nights in St. Thomas and then ferry to our charter? Also, any good hotel recommendations to help not rent a car or taxi too much? THANKS!

It would probably be easier to stay 2 nights on STT, but it depends on whether you want to have a day on Tortola or not? Or will you have a chance to see that island more during or after your charter?

For STT the HI in Charlotte Amalie is near downtown restaurants as well as the ferry. There's also the Mafolie up the hill with a shuttle.

If you decide to spend a night on Tortola you'll probably want to be near Road Town, we haven't stayed in Road Town because we always stay on the west/north side of the island. But I'm sure you can get ideas from hotel reviews here on TA. If you want to stay on the west/north shore look at Myett's in Cane Garden Bay to be close to the beach bars/restaurants.

Have a great charter!

I'd stay the two nights on STT. The first night you're going to be pooped out anyway from the traveling and, rather than rushing off to Tortola for another day of packing and unpacking, chill out for the day and another night on STT before heading out. As cmoores mentioned, Windward Passage is right on the waterfront but I'd recommend Crystal Palace above town. Ron is an excellent host who'll even pick you up at the airport on your arrival and get you to the CA ferry for your departure!

Thank you for the recommendation STT. Windward Passage no longer a Holiday Inn.

Thanks so much for your posts. Very helpful. Still looking around since we have a range of people who want resort like the Marriott Frenchman's Reef and those who do not want that kind of cost per night since we have spent so much on the charter for the week. This is to relax and decompress before we are all cruising for the week. All suggestions appreciated.

So the Windward Passage not being a Holiday Inn - is that good or bad? Reviews for there are not the best. LIked the location as trying not to use taxis a lot.

I don't think it matters whether it's a Holiday Inn or not (it used to be) but Crystal Palace's accessibility to town is on a par with WP's and in my opinion offers a far more interesting and personal experience than the typical hotel.
