AA Flight from San Juan to St. Thomas |
|
For those of you who have taken this flight a couple questions: We are considering booking on American where we would change planes in San Juan. It looks like they keep the connection times pretty short - like 45 min to land and change planes. Has anyone had a problem with this? Also, how "bad" are the planes you fly to St. Thomas - by "bad" I mean how small and rickety? Thanks! |

We flew to STT earlier this month with a plane change in San Juan and had absolutely no problems. I would MUCH rather go through San Juan than Miami. American's Caribbean hub at SJU runs pretty well, and besides, SJU ain't O'Hare! It's a fairly small airport and easy to navigate. Depending on the AA flight you book from SJU to STT, you may be on a 737 or you may be on one of the turboprops. On our leg from SJU to STT we were on a 737 -- "cruising" altitude was only 9,000 feet and the flight lasted barely 20 minutes. No beverage service. Returning from STT to SJU a week later, we had one of the ATRs, which seemed to have been upgraded recently since it had leather seats. I personally prefer the ATRs -- always a very smooth flight. We've flown American's turboprops many times (including a two-hour flight from SJU to St. Lucia) with no problems at all -- they hold 50 to 70 people and are anything but "rickety." Enjoy your trip, but if you're going to St. Thomas, I would advise a day trip to St. John to see what you're missing!

I agree with getmetothe rumpunch. I have also taken this flight many times. However, sometimes later in the day they are a little backed up. You should bring a carry on with you that has all your essentials. Sometimes the plane has a wieght factor and they will send porple first and then the baggage comes in on a later flight either the same night or the next morning. They will deliver delayed bags to all the hotels.

Good points all...I've done this trip many times and had few problems. A connection time of 45 minutes is plenty. It'll only take you 10 minutes to walk to the other part of the AA terminal if you have a turboprop flight. There are several flights during the day and sometimes the smaller plane flights are cancelled if not enough people and then they're all put on the next big jet going over. So, expect that you might have a delay -- or maybe not. Also, the weight factor is a consideration. Last trip we were three people with three bags. Two bags actually arrived in STT EARLIER than we did and the last bag didn't arrive until the next day! So...take essentials/toothbrush and swim suit/in a carryon. None of the planes are "bad" or "rickety." I actually like the turboprops and the flight is basically just up and down...And I agree with another poster, I prefer switching planes in San Juan to Miami. Once in San Juan you're already in the tropics and you're almost there! In fact, we like to do a couple days layover in San Juan on the way back and enjoy Old San Juan. Lots of fun!
