Has anyone stayed at the Freferikstead hotel? We are staying only one night before flying home. Is there a better place to stay? With only one evening on the island, what would be a good activity for a mom and two teenage daughters? Where to dine? Thanks!

You would be better off staying in or near Christensted. We always stay at Carrington's Inn which is in the hills above Christensted. www.carringtonsinn.com. Also check out the reviews here on TripAdvisor. It is fabulous and very relaxing.

You could take a taxi into town (only a few dollars each way) for some shopping (most shops close fairly early). For dinner, there are many choices in Christensted. On the boardwalk with a view of the water, you could try RumRunners. For a courtyard atmosphere, Kenrick's is wonderful but a little expensive.

After dinner, I would just head back to Carringtons for a dip in the pool or just sit and relax and look out over the harbor. Roger and Claudia may even plan to have ice cream or cookies for an evening snack.

You might want to look at SandCastle on the Beach. F'sted is much closer to the airport so you would have less taxi time than if you went into C'sted. There's a great restaurant there, but I can't remember the name of it. The owner's name is Andre. Also, SandCastle has a very nice restaurant as well.

I would definitely not stay in F'stead. The environment in town is not a good depiction of St. Croix, I too would stay towards C'stead. I would recommend the Hibiscus or Cormorant, within walking distance of each other, nice beach, and about 10 minutes to C'stead where there is great shopping and restaurants. Good luck.

Frederiksted has had it's difficulties since Hurricane Hugo in 1989. However, it is now looking absolutely beautiful after an extensive revitalization project. I own one of the first shops to open there after the re-construction and several shops, which were there prior, managed to survive through it all.

Frederiksted Hotel is a charming, old hotel right in the heart of one of the most beautiful and historic waterfronts in the Caribbean. Don't be mislead by ANY post that tell you otherwise. Please visit my website to learn more: www.islandfireglass.com.

Frederiksted, and the west end of St. Croix, have the best beaches, several of the best restaurants, the best jazz and much more of the best that St. Croix has to offer.

It is true that F'sted is much slower paced than Christiansted. There are many more shops in Christiansted, and many more restaurants. All of the boat tours leave from Christiansted as well. However, the two towns are only about 17 miles apart, so you are never very far from whatever the Island has to offer--wherever you stay.

First, I agree with IslandFire Glass about Frederiksted. I live about a 1/2 mile North and have seen a real transformatiom in the past few years. Especially the water front. There are several good places to eat. Blue Moon is good and has jazz on Friday nights. St Trope is a real French cafe and has the best food on the island.

I have never been in Frederiksted Hotel but have eaten there. Breakfast only though. It's a place I might stay if I was coming to STX on business and needed to be in Frederiksted. On vacation, I personally would not chose the place to stay. There is no secure parking for your rental car and it's not the kind of place you want to take pictures of to show friends at home.

One more thing. IslandFireGlass makes really neat blown glass items. It would be worth a visit to his shop.

F'sted is one of the prettiest carribean towns you could ever find. However, it is totally deserted. Be very careful at nighttime.
