Hurricane season is until Mid to late November. This is also off-season which could mean limited hours at restaurants etc. If you can be more specific about what you want to do while on St. Croix and what your likes are, I think you will get more help.

Personally, I would not go then as it is hurricane season and can be hotter/more humid/rainier, etc.

We go mid-April to mid-May which is when the price goes down and usually the weather is great.

But - many people do go in Sept/Oct and like it.

We love STX in October. No crowds, warm water, reduced hotel rates. The only drawback for us is that Eat @Cane Bay is usually closed in October. But there are plenty of other great restaurants open like Rowdy Joe's on Cane Bay and Angry Nate's on the Christiansted boardwalk.

Go as late in October as you can. Last year we went mid to late September. The weather was dry enough but it was HOT! Many of the restaurants were closed, to reopen in Oct. We went in late October of 2005. We arrived 12 hours before Hurricane Gamma brushed the island. That was the closes weather drama we have had on STX. The last couple of years has seen a decrease in the number of hurricanes. I think this year will be low too.

We'd agree, no trips after late July too risky with the hurricane season. With the kids and all, summer is our season, and the temps don't change more than +/- 4.0-degrees F hereabouts. Make your reservations, get your rent-a-car from Centerline, and DIY around the usual Caribe tourist-traps. Just have a full kitchen handy if your like good food (hint).

Charles R is misleading you into believing there are "usual tourist traps" on STX and that you will need to cook your own food. This is ridiculous and untrue. There are many hard working restaurateurs working just as hard during off season as in season. You will not have to cook for yourself, no hint about that.

However, if you want to stop by a Plaza Extra (grocery) or some of the smaller groceries, you can certainly get cheaper provisions for a day out at a beach and avoid the beach cafe's, etc.

My motto: on vacation means holiday and no cooking required! Best to you, just relax. FYI, sat next to a hurricane hunter on a flight to STX recently, they don't anticipate any foul or disastrous weather (recent one was a few years ago, Omar, a cat. 3 when it hit the SE part of the island). So we are always prepared but also aware of weather disturbances. Please enjoy!

The weather can be great outside of any major storms. As pointed out by others many of the dining establishments are closed and make it difficult for some staying in hotels. I highly recommend staying in a condo resort where you have full kitchens as well as space and things to do if the weather gets bad during your stay. Nothing worse than being stuck in a room, at least with a condo you can enjoy the amenities of home.

Also, look for a beach resort since you can always enjoy the water and view regardless of the weather!
