north shore beaches and Dec/Jan wind

Some travel books indicate the winds in Dec/Jan are significant and can make swimming on north shore beaches less than ideal (waves? rip tide?). The winds made boating (dive) difficult in St. John at that time. If we want to be close to a swimming beach, is there an area of the north shore that is protected or is there a better area to stay for sandy beach swimming that time of year? Which area is most protected for snorkeling/diving Dec/Jan-for someone who wants to dive from shore and avoid the boat?

Thanks!

The beaches on the west end are the best for swimming. You can dive the pier if the cruise ship is not in port. Everyone says that there's alot to see there.

I should think Cane Bay and maybe Salt River would both be protected. As there are dive companies in both areas that can be found on line, I think the thing to do would be to call them.

The West End is almost always best for nice beaches and calm waters. Shoys is a great beach with excellent snorkeling around the pyramid house unless the seas are up. Tamarind and Green Cay have excellent snorkeling also unless it's super rough.
