We are planning a trip to the Buccaneer from July 18 to 25 and are wondering if anyone has any suggestions for how and where to see turtles during our visit.

Our favorite place is at Tamarind Reef at Green Cay. Ask at the beach shack for directions on how to get beyond the man made breakwater. They have rest stop floats usually set out on the water. Swim down in front of the Hotel and you will find a lot of soft coral which the turtles like to come in and feed on.

Also check with SEA (http://stxenvironmental.org) they some times have turtle egg laying and hatching excursions out at Sandy Point.

Enjoy your trip!

We were snorkeling at Tamarind Reef two weeks ago and saw three Hawksbill turtles in the space of a few minutes.......very cool! I went back twice with an underwater camera, but didn't see them again.

I've seen turtles at Tamarind Reef, The Buccaneer, Cane Bay and Buck Island. My experience is that you never know if they will be there or not. They are pretty neat when you do get a glimpse of them. I have trouble identifying which type they are. They all kind of look the same to me ,except... One time while snorkeling at Cane Bay the water was kind of stirred up and visibility was not the best, I saw a monster. It kind of came swimming up alongside of me and I didn't see it until it was right next to me. I swear it was the size of a volkswagen. That thing scared the s--t out of me. I had to go into shore and clean myself up.... and have a beer at that bar..

You might want to read this article re: visiting Sandy Point for some insight into seeing them nesting.
