I am possibly moving to St. Croix in a few months. Could you tell me where a good place for my wife and I to move to. Do you also know what the average housing prices are or is it better to live in an apartment? Thank you.

My husband and I live here in St. Croix and I think you'll love it here.

As far as what your looking for in housing we like everything on the northshore, east end is nice but a little pricey, you might want to check out some condos, they have some nice ones here. Try hooking up with 4 star real estate, they can lead you in the right direction.

Go to this website called www.gotostcroix.com click on real estate, this will really help you.

Good Luck

Hi Topeka,

I'm a former KC (Belton actually) gal who has been here for 8 years. Before looking for a place to live, you need to consider if you'll be working and if so, where. Although the island looks small on paper, drive time can be complicated by roads and traffic, especially during the school year. I have chosen to live mid island because I'm close to everything. I alway suggest getting the local paper prior to moving (I used to sell Real Estate in KC but am now an RN). I got the St. Croix Avis for almost a year which provided me with the information I needed to make a good decision along with input from friends who already lived here. If you can give me a bit more of a hint of what you are looking for (do you have children, dogs, etc) and where you'll be working I can be more help and try to network you with the best resourses. I have a number of friends in real estate here but most of them don't work with rentals. This is a wonderful place to live!!! I'm going to be in KC in August - make myself go at least once a year to see my family.

Regards,

rnonstx

rnonstx,

Where are you working as a nurse? At the hospital? Surgery? Floor?

Hope you don't mind me asking.

Hi Jim,

Don't mind at all. I worked at the hospital from 1997 to 2003 on the psych unit. Right now I'm working as a Nurse Educator for a grant funded program doing public health outreach. This takes me to all three of our government health locations as well as out in the field. Are you in the medical field? We actually have pretty good care here, given the fact that we are essentially a very small rural type community with a population of around 60,000. Compared to the average rural county in Missouri or Kansas, we are much better. I'm glad to answer any questions about St. Croix and what we have to offer as well as any problems that exist. This is my permanent home and I love it!

Regards,

Linda

Linda,

I've been a orthopaedic rep (joint replacement, trauma etc) for a long time. So I spend most of my time in the hospitals.

I would guess joint replacements go to P. R. or stateside? I was wondering about trauma? Rodding, plating or screws for a femur, tibia, ankle?

thanks,

Jim W

Jim,

Truthfully, I'm not sure how much Dr. Pederson is doing at the hospital in terms of replacements. I can find out, since a friend of mine is working as the intake nurse for surgery. Right now we are working on getting a really good cardiac facility up and running. Where you go for major surgery depends largely on finances and family situation. For instance, if I was going to be laid up for a couple of weeks, I'd go to KC and make my daughter take care of me. After all, what are kids for. We have a good number of vets here so they go to the VA in PR.

Regards,

Linda

Hi Linda!

I see where you said you live mid island and I'm wondering if you live in the Queen's Quarter area? On a recent visit I noticed someone is renovating the old hotel and pool area. I used to live there as a teenager and had so many happy times by that pool! I was upset to hear when Hugo destroyed it. Do you know what's happening there?

Well the last I heard was an idea to try to use that for a medical school. However, that is still going 'round and 'round in the government. I'll ask if anybody knows the latest scoop, my Realtor friends should be current on that.

Ok-- thank you! We were there last year and were sad to see how dilapidated it was. Only a small portion of the rock wall that was the base of the swimming pool could be seen with bushes totally overtaking everything. This February we drove back up to it and were shocked to see the whole area practically manicured looking it was so cleaned up! The hotel had burned in places, but now you can walk all around it like we used to. Someone is definately doing something to it. We asked a couple who were walking on Valley Road if they knew what was going on and they said they'd heard several rumors, one being that the new owner was reopening it as a B & B, but weren't sure. That would be nice!

We lived on Ridge Road back in the '70's and that was as high as the houses were---I was surprised to see all the new roads that had been cut in there now that were so much higher. One road in particular (can't think of the name) went up a steep hill and had a house on it facing the west with the most amazing view of all the west of the island! And we thought we had a view with Ridge Road...

I like that part of the island. It would be nice if someone would open a B & B there. Keep me posted if you find out anything!
