Police raid night clubs, suspect prostitution

A raid on several night spots on Providenciales in the wee hours of Saturday morning July 10, resulted in at least one female Dominican national being fingered for prostitution, another for assault on a police officer and the five others, including male Dominican National, taken in for suspicion of immigration violations.

According to a source, a number of night club operators on Providenciales and on Grand Turk have been suspected of facilitating prostitution and lewd on-stage entertainment acts at their facilities, and that the police was on a mission to rid the communities of such operation.

Police Press Officer, Sergeant Calvin Chase in a statement on the matter noted: “July 2010 Law Enforcement Officers in Providenciales conducted an operation on 2005 Night Club Five Cays Road, Cameo's Night Club Airport Road and Pumpy's Bar Five Cays. One female Dominican national was arrested for assault on police, one female Dominican national was arrested on suspicion of prostitution, four female Dominican nationals and two male Dominican nationals were detained for immigration purposes.”

Saturday’s incident was not the first time that police in the TCI were carrying out such raids on night spots suspected to be involved in providing adult entertainment at their establishments, having conducted raids on the capital island and Provo in the recent past.

A report carried in a recent edition of a Caribbean newspaper linked prostitution to human smuggling across the region, including the Turks and Caicos Islands. According to the report, high-priced women were being jetted into certain Caribbean territories to provide adult entertainment for a particular class of individuals. When their missions are complete, the prostitutes would be jetted out to another Caribbean territory to deliver another round of adult pleasure to their waiting clients.

Those services, The SUN was told, are done at secluded areas well outside the access of local law enforcers. “You would be frightened to know the kind of persons from our society who participate in these high-priced sex acts, some of them are prominent persons in our society. Some of them are married men with family and hold key positions in both private and public life,” a police source noted.

A United States Congress report on human trafficking in Latin America and the Caribbean compiled in 2007 revealed that exploitation or forced labor, both within a country and across international borders, is one of the most lucrative and fastest growing types of organized crime.

According to the report, due to the clandestine nature of this type of crime, it is difficult to gather reliable data on its prevalence in particular countries and regions of the world. It noted that researchers have generally had to rely on estimates compiled by non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in order to assess the scope of the global trafficking industry. NGO reports on trafficking tend to contain more anecdotal evidence than concrete statistics.

In addition to the difficulty of gathering good statistics on a clandestine activity, countries may be reluctant to publish data for fear of being cited by the U.S. government as having a major trafficking problem.

The report said the U.S. State Department estimates, some 600,000 to 800,000 people are trafficked across borders annually worldwide for forced labor, domestic servitude, or sexual exploitation.

Some 80 percent of those trafficking victims, the report further stated, are women and girls, and up to 50 percent are minors. These figures do not include victims who are trafficked domestically who, if included, would raise the total to between two million and four million.

You still want to go AFTER reading that article? I hope the possibility of some jail time in a foreign country is "exotic" enough for you in the event of a raid and the discovery of possible prostitution, and God forbid, human trafficking. Try some off the beaten track snorkeling or something instead.
