MUST DO's for first timers and Q's

This will be our first trip to Provo in May. We'll be renting a villa and plan to self cater in terms of food, for the most part. We'll also be renting a car.

We like to:

-explore on our own and avoid tourist traps

-sink our toes in the sand with a good book

-snorkel

-certified divers - perhaps one day of diving

Questions:

Where to shop for groceries?

Any cheap to moderately priced places to eat for breakfast, lunch dinner?

What are the Must-Do's and Must See's on the island?

The best places on the island to snorkel?

Recommended dive shops?

Recommended car rental agency?

Possibly interested in a Catamaran sail??

Nightly entertainment such as live music available?

Anything else you'd like to share about Provo...

Just saw your post. This May will be our 3rd trip to Provo; last 2 years we stayed at Sands on Grace Bay; this year, whole family going, staying in villa on Sapodilla. Hope this helps: shop the IGA for groceries; if you are able to take spices, coffee, snacks such as popcorn, nuts, granola bars, peanut butter, etc it will be some savings. Also suggest you hit the duty free liquor at your last airport stop before going to Provo; when we stayed on Grace Bay, we ate breakfast in room and evening cheese, wine, etc in room so focused on Seaside Cafe, Somewhere on the Beach, Hemingway's etc for mid-day meal. Found that to be reasonable and good. Also there is a good pizza place in the Salt Mills area, all within walking distance from the Sands. Live music at Somewhere's, Hemingways; do take a rum punch/snorkel cruise; you can snorkel in front of Somewhere's. Never rented a car before, but this year will use Grace Bay Car Rentals; went to Da Conch Shack last year and enjoyed but based on recent posts, will pursue Bugaloo's this year. We LOVE Turks/Caicos and look forward to our trip this year; we too are happy to have toes in the sand and a good book w. a good drink!! total relaxation.

Car - Grace Bay Car rentals

Food - Somewhere; any meal; Pizza Pizza for delivery of good pizza

night entertainment - Check the Havana Club at Windsong when they have karaoke night

snorkel - bight and smith reefs off the beach

explore - use the car and go to the beaches at Northwest Point (don't leave valuables in car and leave it unlocked)

Cheap food options are Ricky's Flamingo cafe on Grace Bay just west of Ocean Club, IGA takeout pizza, Jimmy's Dive Bar, Fresh bakery for breakfast, Salt mills diner and hemingways also have inexpensive breakfast and lunch. I would also recommend driving over to Bugaloos in 5 cays area-great conch salad and fritters.

Must sees are Taylor bay, chalk sound (eat lunch at las brisas), Long Bay-you have to check out each side of the island to appreciate the unique beauty of the different beaches.

Snorkeling spots are the bight reef, smiths reef, and a new one we tried this year was at Leeward/Sunset beach-there is a large area of rocks with amazing sea life.

honeytraveler... "you have to check out each side of the island to appreciate the unique beauty of the different beaches." What consists of each side of the island and how do you know when you're there? Chalk Sound and Taylor Bay are on one side. What is the other side?

No one ever seems to mention it but we love Tiki Hut in Turtle Cove for a nice, reasonably priced lunch. Lots of options, the service is good and the view of the marina is nice too. Definitely a good choice if you snorkel Smith's Reef. For a fun drive/adventure, head down Venetian Drive to Turtle Tail - almost at the end you will see the 2 most incredible villas on the island.
