Has anyone stayed at "Grace Bay Place"

My boyfriend and I have booked the one bedroom unit at Grace Bay Place for later this year, and I just wanted to see if anyone had stayed there before and had some sort of review on it. I cannot find much on the internet and they only post 2 testimonials on their website, so any help would be appreciated.

The owner, Douglas Wood, rents out a 1 bedroom poolside suite, as well as a 2 bedroom suite. The rates are extremely good, which has me a tiny bit nervous as they are considerably lower than other places at Grace Bay (especially over New Years, which is when we are going).

You can find the rental by googling "Grace Bay Place" but their own website is the only place I have seen it advertised (no vrbo, or any other rental sites).

Any tips appreciated!

My husband and I lived at Grace Bay place and loved it. It is directly across the street from Gace Bay Beach and close (walking distance) to both Saltmills and Ports of Call, as well as Hemmingway's(The Sands) and a few other resorts. It is an ideal location for not being right ON the beach. Dougie is great and all of the long term tenants are as well...it has a very "Melrose Place" feel to it. The added bonus is that the pool is almost always yours alone, and you can cook your own food. You probably won't get many responses to this question, as, for the most part, the units are rented long term, and the short term thing is fairly new.

If you have any other questions, feel free to contact me.

Shannon

PS. There is a resident potcake onsite by the name of Whip, and she has no problem coming up to you on your lawn chair and wrapping her paws around your neck, while pretending she isn't even there (looking away with a "you don't see me" kind of attitude.) Hope you don't mind dogs....

Oh thank you so much for the response. Yes, Doug has been wonderful to deal with and never gave me any reason to be concerned. I just thought it might be a good idea to ask around a little, since the price we are paying is incredibly cheap compared to the resort prices (we're even going over New Year's and he did not charge higher prices for holiday season), so I was hoping the "if it sounds too good to be true it probably is" didn't end up happening, and we be stuck there since I'm sure a last minute rental on the island would be pretty hard to find, and cost us a fortune if we did find one.

I have searched and searched on the internet and the only thing I have seen about Grace Bay Place is Doug's site for the rental (I think I even had to do a fair bit of searching to find that when I did since he does not advertise on the main travel rental sites). Your confirmation puts my mind completely at ease, and glad to hear you have met Doug (he must live there too, since he included airport pick up and drop off in the rental rate?)

His pictures of the suite are very nice and the pool area looks gorgeous (and thank you for telling me about the dog, I'll actually be looking forward to that since I know I'm going to miss our little dog that we are leaving behind!) Now the only thing I hope is that I haven't raved about the awesome deal we got too much and he ups the price! ;)

If you don't mind, I do have a couple of little questions:

-how long does it take to walk from there to be on the beach?

-is there a grocery store and liquor store within walking distance (we weren't planning on renting a car there).

-is 1% milk available there (I know, strange question haha)

-are you allowed to have alcohol on the beach there, or are you arrested/ticketed for open liquor? (I always just assume that you can have drinks on the beach in places like that, but all of the beaches in Canada, you get a liquor ticket, so just wanted to make sure!)

Thanks again for taking the time to respond!

No problem at all....

Yes, Dougie does live there (when we were there at least half the tenants were Canadian, ourselves included)

If you are not renting a car, Dougie will probably take you up to the IGA. (If not, I will...send me a private message and I will give you my cell #) There are no grocery stores nearby and the convenience stores are pricey and not well stocked.

There is a liqour store nearby, just a 3 minute walk. As well, there is Saltmills cafe (cappucino, lattes, good sandwiches)Danny Buoys (pub food and cold beers) just a hop away.

There is a Beach access road across the street, or you can walk through Point Grace Resort or The Sands. From point A to point B, about 5 minutes. You can have open alcohol on the beach legally, but I recommend plastic cups, in case something drops/breaks.

And finally, yes, 1% milk is available.

Hope this helps!

Thanks Shannon, that is all a huge help! (And I just might take you up on the IGA offer when the time comes so be prepared haha). I think we will probably do 1 "big" grocery trip when we get there and the rest should all be just trips to the liquor store, so that's great we can just walk there.

Now if I can only figure out how to be another one of you lucky Canadians that gets to live there year round I'm set haha.

Thanks again!

Ha! Once you are here, you will figure a way to stay...lol! I spoke with Dougie's Mom last night and she said that a trip to the IGA is actually included in the rental price, so you are sorted! I will make sure to remind him (time and again), so he doesn't forget. Post closer to your arrival date so I remember you are coming, and i will pop down and see you!

Cheers,

Shannon

Lol that's perfect. We're there at the end of December for a week (over New Year's). I will definitely be in touch and thanks again for the help!

7. Re: Has anyone stayed at "Grace Bay Place"

Hi there

I'm typing this message from one of Doug's 1-bedroom units by the pool. We're here for a month and I cannot recommend it highly enough. It's clean, well equipped and in a great location - 2 minutes walk to the beach and within walking distance of a number of restaurants.

As mentioned, Doug gave us a lift to the supermarket on the first day so we did a big shop that lasted for a couple of weeks. The fridge is huge and comes with a sizable freezer section so we didn't need to visit the food shops again for a while.

The family live on site and have been extremely welcoming and helpful. There's been an addition to the potcake contingent too. Now two dogs 'Gwip' and the new puppy 'Trulo'. Both are lovely, very friendly and waggy.

It's still true to say that most of the tenants are long-termers with work on the island so many days the pool area is deserted.

All in all, a great choice so if you've got any further questions let me know.

Have a great trip.

The place is great!!! It's a fabulous 'family' business and the Wood's really want to make a great impression. They are very considerate and kind, will keep an eye on you and offer alot of great local advice.

The complex is really new and clean looking but the prices are such that you can use it as a 'jumping off' point if you want to visit the other islands. Or spend your money on diving rather than where you lay your head. Within two minutes you can be at 'Salt Mills' that has the world's best sushi restaurant and there is also an art gallery, the absolutely necessary 'tourist' souvenier shop, and *ahem* a liqour store if you do partake.

Walk across the road and you are at the most gorgeous beach imaginable. You can see from the beach the reef, world's third largest. The diving here is second only to Indonesia as far as I am concerned and the travel time is alot easier on the budget and the body...

I am more interested in exploring the other islands right now, and this is the perfect jumping off position. You do need to rent a car if you are going further afield, but if all you want to do is go to a few restaurants and read a book on the beach you are all set!
