Trip Report-- Day 6--Gypsy Woman/Trouble In Paradise

Today started off great. Snorkelling with Fish Girl(my tween daughter), seeing my Turtle friends, who have been very pleasant and sociable and just hanging out with DR. VICKI and our 6 yr. old twin daughters on Grace Bay. Playing in the sand with dozens of sand buckets, shovels and small sand equipment, building whatever we want. Why sand castles are so ever popular amazes me? But I must tell you I enjoy it better than most 63 yr. olds do. Digging canals, constructing huge castles, moats with water and sometimes burying an old guy with just his head exposed is so cool. You should see the expressions and reactions people make upon seeing this? The little twins place a bottle of water just a foot away from my head and ask all the people who pass by the Reef area to assist in giving me a drink. Something you would think you see on TV(where's the cameras?). Everyone around the area for a while know what's going on, but the beach walkers and passerbys don't. My head is partially covered by a box and just my face is sticking out. Not quite the thing you would expect to see on Grace Bay. Would you look? You bet--for you have never seen this thing happen before when you were on Grace Bay have you? After a lunch of Conch Chowder and Cracked Conch, we go back out to the beach for the afternoon session. Well, a lady comes by our beach camp and offers to braid our twin daughters hair. Fish Girl & I are out in the water snorkelling and when we come in the lady demands a lot more money than agreed upon. Like triple. $66 wasn't enough that Dr. VICKI paid her, but she demanded $3 per inch of hair for every braid. She only put 2 braids in for our 2 girls each. Took her a little over an hour. She asked(demanded) me how much money I got to pay her. Not the smartest thing you want to say to this guy. She wanted another $120! I suddenly went from seeing my Turtle friends and my "Happy" Island mode just disengaged. A couple of people from the resort got involved and this 35 yr. old woman kept trying to extort money. Now everyone knows about my special person-to person skills I have and I started to give her a little lecture about she was trying to intimidate the wrong person when she stated she would call the police. Contrary, I will personally call the police for her and have them ask about her papers being in order and her menu of prices she should have that backs up her prices. She started to back pedal at this point and slowly walked away after a few minutes of arguing. What an afternoon on Grace Bay!!. Now, for dinner we had a Rezzy I made with Stuart Gray, Owner/Chef of Coco Bistro for 7pm. 3 things I requested. I wanted my 3 young daughters to see "Coco" the Cat make her appearance, a stage table and that I would pay with $2 bills. Believe me, He did not disappoint us when he personally met my 4 girls in their nice dresses at the door. Best service and grilled Lobster twin tails we had so far this trip. YES, we are going back for seconds! Thank you Stuart. Now, after we got back to our home base of operations, I announced to my 4 girls that I was on call. YES, the Casino wanted me come in on Sunday night to clean their Blackjack21 tables @ double time because I do such a great job. They did say that a guy who looked a lot like me knocked off a bit too early last night. You know, I thought they'd overpaid him myself. Day 7 is coming. DR. JIM

I was always under the impression that people selling stuff on Grace Bay (be it hair braiding or whatever) was frowned upon and/or illegal? Its always been one of the reasons why I love Grace Bay, as other beaches on other islands I've been too, I always felt like I was being constantly bombarded by people trying to sell me stuff. :(

Twenty-one years ago I travelled to the Bahamas to Paradise Island, and the moment I walked out on the beach, I became harassed with requests to braid my (then long) hair. I was approached about every ten yards as my husband and I walked down the beach. I have no desire to ever return there. I sure hope this does not become the norm in Provo.
