i'm hoping one of you well traveled souls out there has some experience or knowledge of jfk airport and can help me with a couple questions...

we leave for provo in a few weeks and since we are going thru a different airport this year (usually we go thru charlotte) and because we only have 1 hour between arrival and take off i have been trying to find maps of the set up at jfk so we can be prepared for finding our way...

we are flying american airlines from boston arriving at 7:05am in terminal 9...then departing at 8:05am in terminal 8...

when i booked the flight i found a rough guide and saw these terminals are right next to each other...now i'm looking further and it looks like the terminals are not connected?

is this so?

do they have walkways or tunnels to go between? or do you have to taxi to the next building?

and if you have to leave the building does that mean going thru security again?

does anyone have any idea if i can realistically expect to have enough time to make our connecting flight?

i know this is a turks and caicos forum but maybe someone has done this terminal change before...or knows the airport?

any help is appreciated...

I will research this further for you, but what I do know is that terminal 9 is domestic (you coming from Boston) and terminal 8 is international. They are right next to one another.

What I do not know and will try to figure out is if they are connected inside or by a sidewalk outside.

I think that you will have enough time, if you do not have to recheck your bags. JFK/AA is well marked and there are people all over to direct you.

justlaura - I am 99% certain it's connected inside - we leave from terminal 8 to go to provo on AA and it's a pretty large terminal - I don't think you have to go outside or take a taxi - let me see if I can find a definite answer for you.

Laura: I spend a lot of time flying in and out of JFK. The terminals are connected by a walkway. The domestic terminal is older and looks like a typical 1970s airport terminal. After you exit the security area (yes, you will need to go through security again) you will proceed to the right and just keep going (follow the signs) to the international terminal. It is brand new, beautiful and huge but easily accessible. I haven't had any trouble with security at either terminal, it moves pretty quickly. The only issue may be your arrival back at JFK. How long do you have? If the Provo flight is delayed at all, you sometimes arrive at JFK at the same time as all of the European inbound flights and need to clear customs with them. That can take a bit of time. With 1.5 to 2 hours between flights you should be fine!

Have a great time and please love on the pups you see for me! DH goes to Provo on business on Sunday so I am loading him up with Easter goodies for those precious souls! Moms

thanks ajax and moms and beachbumjen...

moms, our flight home is direct to boston so i won't have to worry about going back thru on the way home...the biggest reason we switched to this flight was the direct home...that will be nice...

i'll for sure love all the puppies i see and tell them it's from auntie moms...lol...

it sounds like we'll be okay with just an hour as long as going thru security is quick...the connected terminals is a good thing...

does anyone happen to know where the duty free shop is? usually in the international terminal...wonder if it will be possible to hit that too...

maybe i'm hoping for too much...lol...i'll be happy to make our connection never mind the duty free...oh well...lets hope the iga has jagermeister...:)

Actually justlaura there was nothing odd about your thread. Getting to Provo is just as important as being here and advice from travellers with particular airport experience can make ones journey just a little less stressful.

For example, anyone travelling through Heathrow and arriving at terminal 3 then having to get to terminal 4 for the Provo flight would know just what I'm talking about.

Have a safe journey and good luck with your connecting buildings and flights.

...heavy sigh...

american changed flight times and we now have less than an hour between flights at jfk...

we will have 50 minutes to go from terminal 9 to terminal 8, IF everything stays on schedule...

should i be worried?

I wouldn't worry-

I used to have to go in between the 2 terminals on flights to Europe all the time, and did fine. they are right next to each other. I think it's harder to go through Miami with a tight conection.

Laura, JfK is pretty good a giving a helping hand (believe it or not), your luggage should go ahead without you having to recheck. Ask your carrier to clearly inform your connecting flight of your arrival and departure times, and to give enroute info to the connecting flight. Just carry on your necessities in case your luggae doesn't make the connection.(bathing suit , sunscreen, and toothbrush ). We actually got a golf cart transfer one time when traveling on a tight schedule. I made a commment about feeling like OJ simpson in the airport, I guess the worker was to young to remember the juice commercial only the murderer he gave me a real strange look but ok after my clarification.

Have a great trip, hope the weather is snorkel perfect. Bringing home anyone special?

The computers went down on our return from Provo we actually sat in the airport longer then we were in the air, thank God it was on the way home.

May your trip be trouble and rain free!!!
