 Just returned from The Sands
Destination Expert   What's this?
for Providenciales

We just returned home from out 13th visit to Provo. We stayed at The Sands, as we usually do when we have our children with us. This was a big birthday for me, so we rented a three bedroom ocean front deluxe and stayed for nearly two weeks. We stayed in #3107. The closest to the beach on the ground floor. We decided long ago that putting our money into "the best room" is wasteful, and having a unit "in the back" lets us visit our favorite spot several times a year. We still agree with that way of thinking, however, we agreed it was the best room we ever had at The Sands and worth it for the special occasion.

Our room had been recently renovated and still in the process of getting window treatments, assessories, art work, etc. The appliances have not come in yet, or the new granite or cabinets.

So far, it has been painted, new matresses, bed linens, bed spreads, bedskirts, throw pillows, some window treatments, new couches, they painted the old armoires and bed frames a distressed white. The master bathroom has new tiled floors and showers with rain heads (very nice). The other bath and a half will not get anything new. This is all done on the original old white tiled floor, which was chipped, scratched, and greying. The lady in charge of the decorating, with helpers, stopped by several times a day with small things to add, she needed to look at the sample cabinet in the unit, a sample piece of granite, at first it was ok, however, after a man showed up to hang window treatments we said he was not allowed in and please pass that on the all the others. No one bothered us after that.

I asked several people what building will be next and most did not know, but the majority said building #4. However, building #3 will get the most things done to it, as it has the most expensive rooms. The bathrooms in the other buildings will not be updated. Such a shame.

Our hot water heater started to leak after the third day, and within a few hours it was replaced. The AC in the back two bedrooms did not work one night, and the next day it was fixed immediately.

Everyone at The Sands was friendly and efficient. I feel that most wait until you say hello first. Our housekeeper was fantanstic, and we tipped her every third or forth day. Our housekeeper from last June in building 6, ran up to me with a huge hug!

Hemingways was good to great, low priced, great service, convienent, and a reservation is a must. (winter season)

We also ate at Coco Bistro, fantastic, The Grill at Grace Bay Club, very good, Magnolia's, very good, Bay Bistro, very good, Inguana's, good, Da Conch, very good. I made all reservations the morning of.

My son dove three times with Caicos Adventure and had a blast. He also fished with J & B and said it was just ok, as the spot they went to was too shallow, but the driver did not want to go anywhere else.

Just a few other things:

The weather was a mixed bag of everything. We had some rain hard and sprinkles. Most days we would have clouds and sun, with a few days of beautiful all sun. We never had a complete wash out day. There was always a nice breeze and never windy enough to leave the beach.

The construction is definetly happening, and did not bother me at all, like it does some people. I loved walking each day and checking things out. It was hard to hear the construction from the beach because of the breezes.

If we did not have kids with us we would stay at LeVele, Point Grace, or Villa Ren. The Tuscany was very pretty and would consider that, as well.

The Sands, OCW, The Palms and The Somerset had the most people in front of it. Almost too much for a quiet romantic vacation.

We had to play the dreaded, crack of dawn, save your chair game. We kept our towels all week and washed them ourselves. They ran out alot.

No bugs at night or the daytime.

I needed a light sweater over my sun dress at night. I tend to run chilly.

We spent about $300.00 at the IGA, all breakfast and lunch stuff, fruit, vegatables, lots of wine, water, soda, juices and snacks. We also brought on suitcase down with us filled with food.

We had a great time and really enjoyed meeting Mr. and Mrs. repeater, from this board. I miss our chats on the beach already! : )

Looking forward to returning in about 4 weeks. We need to organize our "First Annual TA Forum Reunion"!!!

Respectfully Submitted: Ajax <3

Thanks, Ajax1.

Glad to hear that the island construction wasn't bothersome, expecially from one who remembers it when...

Just wondering, how was traffic / road construction? We've never visited during peak season, so I'm curious.

Also, if the beaches in front of The Sands, OCW, Palms, etc. were busy, what did it look like in front of Beaches and Coral Gardens? They must have been standing on top of each other. <smiling>

Desi, When we walked past T & C Club, I especially stopped to observe. You will be tucked back a bit, because of the curve in the beach. you will not be bothered at all. The west construction is far enough away. Only two umbrellas occupied, no games for you.

Traffic was not a bother or busy. We did not travel around daily, but from what I could tell the roads are paved and flowing.

Beaches, well you could just forget it. I closed my eyes and walked FAST! I must say that they have security all over patroling. My son and daughter saw a friend at Beaches up off the beach, by a pool and walked up to say hello. They were immediatley pegged as a non guest and asked to leave. No problems there.

Coral Gardens looked very disappointing. Dirty, grimmy, and old. Not the stand alone wonder it used to be. The construction to it's east is on top of the rooms at CG. You could not possibly use the terraces right now at CG on that end.

Also, something new to me is that the beach is even narrower at CG and Beaches.

Camke, Yes-yes 29! That works... Your trip will be here before you know it.

Also, I did not feel, that from the beach, the construction was loud at The Alexandra. I did not go up into the pool area, though. Lots of wonderful chairs and umbrellas always available for you.

The 19th or 21st works for us. Maybe you should post another topic about it?

I also forgot to add that I thought that the taxi services were EXCELLANT. The Sands resort van picked us up at the airport, as in the past. We did not rent a car and anytime we needed to go out there were a few taxi's lined up at the entrance of The Sands. When we were finished with dinner, we gave the waitress the drivers card, the restuarants would call for us and the taxi would be back within 15 mins. All the drivers were courteous, clean vans, and expensive.

Wow, that's a shame about Coral Gardens. We stayed in the east side third floor penthouse four years ago, just before it started to go downhill. I'm sure we'll be shocked to see it now.

Ever walk past Beaches and ask yourself, "What are these people thinking?" Oh well, to each their own.

Great review. Glad you guys enjoyed your trip. I am going in May to T&C and staying at the Royal West Indies. Any constructions near there?

In answer to CaribDesi's query about b eaches,,,,,yes I thought that as I walked by...regarding the security I walked right in past the sports desk and had a look around...seems like it would be difficult to get any room with a view and frankly it really did not look that nice as my sister had checked and it is very expensive for that type of place. I knew it was really not for me when I saw dozens of strollers parked and families in line (sort of like a NY deli) for breakfast in an inside restaurant when it was just beautiful outside. I am sure some people love it there but I felt even for large families too crowded and noisy...better to take a nice condo and a couple of day passes to experience the AI.

Welcome back Ajax! We were most likely passing you at the airport. We left on the 1st of March. I saw your unit getting done- actually my son would comment on it everytime we walked past to get to the beach. I think they really 'whipped it into shape for you'. Sure looks like a nice view from there.

As for Beaches, I had two different groups of people from that resort stop me in front of the Sands to ask me about staying in a condo there. They were not happy with the 'busy-ness' and number of strollers at Beaches. They wanted a holiday that would suit all generations.

Great idea about the day pass. I hadn't thought of that before. Are they expensive? Maybe next year.... except I'd be worried my 5 year old would sneak back and not enjoy the Sands as much without all the 'entertainment' provided over there. He doesn't need more then a beach and a pool to keep him happy all day!

Thanks for posting

The day passes at Beaches are close to $100 dollars and not worth the money if you ask me. If your toddler is happy with the pool and beach, as Justlaura says> Why fix whats not broken?
