Meridian Club Pine Cay |
|
We are considering a trip to Pine Cay early in July. I would like some input on bugs, weather/heat, and noisy small children. From what I have read these things seem to possibly be a concern. I realize that July is probably not the best time to go but it is the only time we can. Karen |

Have been to Meridian Club three times, but never in summer. I have not had much luck with finding up to date reviews. (Dec. 06 is the most recent that I've seen.) I would expect it to be very hot, languid with only ceiling fans to cool you. I see that they have promotions to encourage families to come in the summer. (There have been increased number of owners' children even in high season.) I would try posting on Fodor's Caribbean Travel Board for more up to date information. I go alternate years and am trying to determine if I will return next Spring. The beach is unbeatable. I love the lack of pace and the quiet, but the management has changed in the last three? years and the cooking is only mediocre to good. Linens and fixtures are due for an update. Cocktails are outrageous. The price high season is comparable to Peter Island, Spice Island and other quiet, beautiful resorts not as content to rest on past laurels. For the first time, I felt a little "ripped off." I had a sense that I was there to be gouged a bit for the benefit of homeowners. The luxury however, is a beach that goes for miles and beautiful soft water that compels you to swim. I will be interested in any "scoop" you come up with. I'm a bit torn myself.

By July the SEasterly trades would have filled in allowing for pleasant nights. No AC, but overhead fans and lots of louvered windows. There is no finer place to wake up in the TCI. Just out your door and over the dune to one of the finest beaches on the planet. It is not by accident that this is where the first Caicos Island development took place in the mid 60's. Rustic, but a true Caicos Island experience. Caicos Island GM and staff. If you are susceptible to the little buggers, might be best to pack some repellent for those nights when the wind dies. July is a great time to visit.

I have been to the beach at Pine Cay (where Meriian Club is) and have been to T&C numerous times in July. I agree with Tingum-gorgeous, gorgeous beach. I have to tell you though, as a tourist, July can get really hot, and the sun is strong. Even if I don't use A/C the whole time, I need it a couple of days while I get acclimated. If all you do is hang out beach time, it's not as bad, but if you bike ride, snorkel, go on excursions, you will need A/C at least a little while. Especially if you are "active" and end up sunburn or heat stroke. My belief, is for those prices, you should decide if you want A/C or not. It is needed in July. Especially coming from Colorado-you get a dryer heat, it's more humid in T&C. Another place to consider is Parrot Cay. Also has a gorgeous beach, and more amenities (which you could choose to use or not to use.) I have never had a major problem with bugs in July, sometimes after a rain shower, and at dusk-never on the beaches. Nothing "Off" spray can't fix. Both have a chance of having some kids, neither is overrun with them. Both have long secluded stretches of beaches, so you can "escape" anything you fill the need with. I also have a small story about the service of both. Parrot Cay has always been phenominal, smile, greet, sorbets by the pool kind of place. I met a couple at Leeward Marina I had to help out. They were headed to Meridian for a long weekend. There plane (AA-seemsed to happen alot over the winter) had been delayed, so by the time they got down there, couldn't make the boat transfer to Pine Cay. Poor woman was about 6 months pregnant-so she was extra frazzled-but to make a long story short--had to spend night on Provo. Meridian did not help them with arrangements (I don't mean payments, I mean just calling around to help them) They were not atainable when they they kept calling to find out how/when to get out there. They were on their own! They stayed at RWI, and the person at RWI tried calling Meridian for transfers the next day. When they did answer, they didn't help, most of the time they didn't answer. (Meridian only has phone in office, none in properties.) But if you have missing guests, you would think they were a little more accessable. Anyway-RWI finally arranged for them to go to Leeward and transfer the boat at 10AM. I met this couple at 11:30!!!!! I had a phone, tried calling Meridian to see about their transfer, of course, no answer. Finally at 11:45 the boat showed up. I think for the monies they spent, the customer service should have been far superior. By the time they got there, they were so built up I'm sure it affected their opinion of Meridian Club. I did reassure them though that the beach has a way of calming them down and they would be fine-but I still feel Meridian should have had better service/communication for their guests.

The island is not meant for kids. There are no swing sets or anything else children oriented. It is a safe place don't get me wrong. But kids tend to need to be entertained and there is vary little entertainment there that is kid oriented. As to bugs its hard to tell one year zero and other years you have to have anti bug bombs in the room. Generally they are a minor issue but at times it can be an issue. Noisey kids are accomadated but are not well liked, IMO. People go there for peace and quiet and don't like to be disturbed. Other than the beach there is not much for the small kids to do. There are mini trips to other islands but that is semi boring even for adults. The snorkeling trips are not kid oriented and they tend to be in 20 foot (or more) deep water so its risky for kids (IMO). BTW just so there is no misunderstanding if you hire a baby sitter chances are the women will not take them to the beach as most natives do NOT know how to swim (go figure). There are places on the island that have shallow water and small kids could use that but I would be hesitant to let them neer there as there are small critters and they could get bitten/scratched/hurt there. Again its a adult place. Ed
