Hello!

I've booked 2 weeks at Tobago Hilton March/April 2007. I'm getting a little worried about safety reading the Canadian, US, UK and Australia travel advice. Seems like I'm most likely will be raped and killed, or at least mugged during my stay.

Does anyone know if it is as bad as these official advices indicate?

I'm used travelling, but if it is very likely to end up in gang violence and armed robberies I'll rather go somewhere else...

Thanks

You are staying in a deserted part of Tobago and will need car service if you want to venture out and see the beautiful island, the beach is very rough at the hilton. Most people stay around Crown point and Store bay and there are always people around,it's also close to all the bars, clubs and restaurants. For the same money you can stay at Coco reef.

Hi,

Personaly I would change hotels. I am a Brit and my wife is Trinidian. My opinion of T&T is that Trinidad is where you need to e more concerned. I travelled round the whole of Tobago in a hire car with no trouble from anyone, except when a taxi driver crashed into me and tried to blame me. But even then the police knew what was going on and sorted it out. Coco Reef is a much, much better choice for location. Store Bay is lovely but can be busy and full of locals trying to sell you stuff, but most are harmless and actually quite nice. It's a great place to get some local food too! Just be careful at night and you will be fine. You can get the hotel to phone taxi's for you when you want to go somewhere, I would say that's the best option. Enjoy your holiday whatever you do.

We stayed at the Hilton in December of 2006. I thought it was a great choice. The hotel is in it's own compound and it is very safe. The only negative is that you can't walk to anyplace because it is not very close to any shops/restaurants. We took a cab every evening to a different restaurant. I believe the fare was $10 US in each direction. The driver did not ask for $$ when he dropped you off, he picked you up when you called and then paid for the round trip.

The Hilton has no charge daily shuttles to pigeon point beach which was very nice.

Thanks a lot for your valuable feedback.

Do you beleive it is safer at Coco Reef since they have a private beach?

How crowded is Codo Reef and the surroundings? I would like it to be a little private and not feel like staying in the middle of a small town..Also would like plenty of space on the beach...

Thanks again.

Coco Reef is more private than the hilton and the beach is 100 times better,The hilton is open to locals, all they have to tell the guard is that they are going to the restaurant or bar for lunch, dinner or just to have drinks. You have to be a guest to enter Coco Reef or have dinner reservations(I think). The hilton is a beautiful resort, but that's about it.

Oh my goodness....just had two groups of friends return from Tobago....one group did the higher end hotel thing and LOVED it..the other two folks did a guest house and loved it even MORE. Please don't worry....common sense as always. My one friend just returned yesterday and I spent three hours chatting tonight...he and his wife had a great time....loved it...can't wait to return....The Higher end group loved it as well, but wished they downgraded to spend more time with the locals and local activities....but in all honesty enjoyed the hotel....

Enjoy Tobago.....it's as safe as you make it....don't walk with an open wallet....duh.....

PS: my friends totally enjoyed the local bus system!! Found it way more fun than local taxi's and tours......had a blast.

cheers

Having read about safety issues in tobago I too am getting a bit spooked. We were prepared to vist this year but maybe we should go elsewhere. We wanted to stay in a local inn or self-catering place. Maybe not ? Does anyone think we would be safer in a hotel ?

Dear Heblady, suggest you look back at some of the previously posted reviews for people that have just returned and get their outlook and first hand opinions. Hope that helps you decide.

Thank you, so sensible., could have hassle anywhere. Yes, we go for it. Back to my original plan- local guest house and jeep hire. We take our chance. We not rich-young- racist- have manners so we should be ok. Tobago looks so lovely and not too touristy. We went to barbados 12 years ago and loved it. St lucia 2 years ago and hated it. Thats life. Thanks again for putting things in perspective
