We are trying to make a decision between these two islands. Has anybody been to both and can compare them? We are mainly interested in beautiful beaches and good food.

Can't bet against you, Dickie. I think you'd win!
The point of day trips is a good one.
So what day trips would you do? I've already decided from reading these post to do the Tobago Cays on the Friendship Rose.
Really, it could actually be more than a daytrip if we chose. We could spend a couple nights on one of the other islands. But which would you recommend? From the pictures, Union looks very pretty with the mountainous landscape. How are the beaches there? Where would you stay?
The Friendship Rose is a good fun day for sure. Also get the ferry and go over to Vincy. Its not the best place in the world to visit but Young Island is worth a look and you can have a fabulous lunch there and a relax. Its close to the port, just a short taxi ride away so you dont have to go for miles.
Also you can visit the places where Pirates of the Caribbean were filmed if you're into that sort of thing. One place I like is up past Barrouille on the west coast and has the village, gallows and port area. theres a restaurant there too (nothing else though) but I dont know if its open in the day as well as evening.
the other fun trip to do is Mustique - either grab a speedboat or you can fly. its so close but its a weird, weird place to go! just go see the island, a taxi can show you round to see all the gorgeous houses and stuff and you can get a great lunch at Basils Bar. just be careful the cabbie doesnt rip you off - pay no more than 50US for it all day.
Just to set the record straight - Anguilla does have day trips available.
Take the ferry from Blowing Point to St Martin (French side for shopping, restaurants and nude beaches) - something we never did but many people do. Or take a taxi to the dutch side for casinos and major shopping.
You can also take a short flight on Liat or Winair to St Barts, Saba (beautiful and interesting island), and Statia. One of our best trips ever was a combo of Anguilla, Saba and St Barts.
Islander
I like the Mustique idea. Why do you say the island is weird?

Funny you should mention Saba and St. Barts as day trips. I just posted on the Anguilla fourum asking if you could ferry there from Anguilla or St. Martin. Did you fly or ferry? How long a trip was it and what was your experience of it?
Thanks all!
Just reread your post, Baby James, You flew. Did you fly to both islands or ferry in between the two?
Mustique is weird because its private and the local population is tucked away in a little village called Lovell or another workers area past Basils way.
you wont see any "life" as such, no dogs, chickens, goats roaming. No children around, no people liming on their porches talking to neighbours.
Its a private villa based island so people live tucked behind gates and hedges and venture out in their mules.
Its definately worth going as its quite so bizarre - just dont expect caribbean islands as you know it!
We flew to St Barts and Saba - at that time there were no ferries, however, there may be ferries available now from St Martin to Saba and St Martin to St Barts.
I would probably fly - it was easy and exciting. I was expecting the landing in St Barts as my folks had been there BUT landing in Saba is an experience never to be forgotten. :) (Short runway on the side of the island.) Saba has no beaches but is beautiful, picturesque and worth the time and effort. St Barts has an ambience very European and much more of a foreign feel - my husband says he's never seen such beautiful women. I think it was just the scooters they were driving... :)
Maybe you just have to go to the Grenadines one year and Anguilla, etc the next. Good luck, Jamie

Winter in Bequia is Heaven! As far as comparisons.....Anguilla is lovely as are SO MANY Carribean Islands. Bequia is the most Unique I have visited. Wonderful People, Terrific food of all kinds, wonderful opportunities to visit numerous Islands inexpensively and lovely beaches. Lush vegetation, abundant flora, hummingbirds galore................I fear that with the present Govt in SVG trying to sell off hundreds of acres on Bequia, the Island will change. I would recommend going sooner rather than later. I like to say that if someone favors 5 star and/or all inclusives, Bequia is probably not for them. If you are going to really relax and don't need entertaining...go to Bequia!
Thanks Obxpat
Unique is good- 5 stars we can do without. We have enjoyed some of the higher end smaller boutique type hotels, but have also been happy as long as the room is clean and its in a good location. The island and the beaches are the most important things to us.
