 New development for Bequia

What do you think are the pros and cons of this development?

Copied from the Vincentian Newspaper.

The Vincentian

2007/02/09

Jack’s Bar, when completed, will be a beach bar, restaurant, spa and boutique on arguably the best beach in Bequia, ‘Tony Gibbons’ also known as ‘Princess Margaret Beach’.

This is the word from the local partner, Tony Regisford, of Richard Brindle owner of the Bar.

The bar is nestled in the far corner closest to Admiralty Bay, and a dinghy jetty (currently under construction) is located in the same corner. The aim of the jetty is so that visitors and deliveries can come to the bar by water.

Both Jetty and Bar have been designed in a manner that would render insignificant negative impact to the environment. Planning permission for the jetty was granted on that basis and supported by an environmental impact assessment conducted by VincentianDr Reynold Murray, putting to rest any fears that neighbours and other Bequia residents might have had.

Jack’s Bar is designed by “Cullum and Nightingale”, an award-winning international firm of Architects based in London. The practice has been responsible for a wide variety of projects for government, institutional and private clients and has worked in many different parts of the world, including: North and South America; Europe; North East and Central Africa; India and Australasia.

Much of the furniture will be made locally.

The project is being built by a local contractor “Hutchinson Construction”, with a local executive architect “Gabriele Peters” and structural engineer “Stewart Engineering”.

According to the local partners, “The design of Jack’s Bar shows that it is possible to combine sensitivity and due deference to historic surroundings with confident expression of individuality and a modern identity.”

Jack’s Bar will be the first of its kind in Bequia and will have a strong local and regional appeal. The vision is that the bar will become a focal point of our tourism plant and will add to the many compelling reasons for tourists especially on yachts, to visit St.Vincent and the Grenadines.

Jack’s Bar will initially employ 18 persons, all local, including the manager.

Opening is scheduled for March 2007.

While the roof material of this bar is I think, a sail cloth type of material, the appearance from the sea is that of an un-painted galvanised roof, not exactly, according to the article, respecting the surroundings, ie. the once prestine nature of the beach. The entire structure jumps out at you as you sail in to Princess Margaret beach to anchor. Pity, it could have been a much softer, natural looking structure.

So how close is this to the Turtle and Flamingo villas? We've been looking at staying there, and wondering if there would be much noise from the bar?

We looked into these villas but were put off as the bar is right in front of them. Also I was concerned by the new jetty for security reasons.

This place has problems not the least of which is the intrusion on this perfect undeveloped beach. I am surprised that this has planning permission but I guess, under Gonslaves, anything goes. That said, the architect, Gabby Peters, has done a terrific job on the rebuild of Retreat House so one hopes this project might reflect the same sensitivity.

From my observations, the place looks a long way from completion. Also. the jetty is not sound as the pilings are twisted out of shape because the footings are not solid. Lord knows what the arrangements are going to be for disposing of black and grey water but I fear the worst.

There were some complaints that the path to Tony Gibbons (aka PM) over the headland from Plantation House had been blocked off but I heard others say that was temporary only - did not check for myself.

The architect for this restaurant was a UK firm. Gabby was the project manager.

While it may appear not close to being completed, it actually is. The design is primarily open air. So far as the "path" being blocked, when all of us complain, it is important to realize that this has always been privately owned land! One of the Sellers is remaining as a Partner in the new venture. The Owners have left a narrow trail down to the beach as a "courtesy". Everyone will miss the "private beach" feeling , however, where in the World would Government prohibit property owners from using their land? "Zoning" ordinances in SVG are rather lax though apparently that is being revisited by the Gov't. Neighboring Landowners have blocked private roads which were not blocked in the past. Some say in protest, they say to keep bar and restaurant patrons off of their property. Apparently some had wanted a hotel/resort there and it was discussed over the years. Glad that did not come to pass! I'll still enjoy early morning snorkeling around the point to PM. Hope some marine life sticks around.

check out Barnard Realty web page all of Tony Gibbon Beach (Princess Margaret ) is for sale. If you have $10 million US it is yours. Be happy the bar is just taking up a small corner of the beach as it could be worse....I know some will think this is mean to say but with any luck a big west swell and surge will change things

The manager told me the bar will not open until summer as they want to open in slow season to get their act together. Interestingly enough, he said they want to specialize in a good breakfast of all things

I know and it is a wonder no big time developer hasn't noticed

last October it was showing "contract pending" which turned the stomachs of many but obviously the deal fell through
