Fishing from the shore

Hi, everone. I will probably do a charter trip during my stay in mid January, but also always take along a travel fishing rod and would appreciate tips on fishing from the shore, you know, baits, lures, hotspots.

Suggest you ask around for the best fishing spots near where you are staying. Just know you won't actually be told where the best spots are (those are closely guarded secrets), but you'll at least likely be directed to a legal fishing zone.

Frozen squid is a common and easily available bait.

Catch and release only for non-residents.

A good spot is off the government dock next to Brac Reef Beach Resort. Plenty of locals go there to fish at night (not so good during the day, dive boat traffic tends to scare away the fish). There are also plenty of fish under the dock at Carib Sands and the next dock down, Kidco. Tarpon tend to hang out here because of locals cleaning fish and if you can hook one they will give you some good sport. Locals tend to use soldier crabs (hermit crabs) as bait rather than squid, but the above poster is right, without a license you can only catch and release from shore unless you are Caymanian. On a boat, no license is required for fishing however. You are allowed to fish from shore anywhere in the Cayman Islands (there are no illegal zones), and the locals are very friendly (and those who fish tend to have boats and not rely on fishing from shore), so will happily direct you to the best spots.

I believe there is no fishing permitted in designated swimming and watersports areas along with wildlife interaction and environmental zones, though not sure if there are any on Cayman Brac.

These Environmental and Wildlife Interaction Zones are mainly in the North Sound in GCM - there aren't any such areas on the Brac
