Little Cayman snorkeling

We are avid snorkelers and were considering a trip to Little Cayman. We had read in the past that the snorkeling is great. Is it accessable from the shore? What are the best spots? Has anyone been recently?

Sorry no first hand knowledge yet, but here's some info on research I've been conducting for an upcoming trip that may help.

Yes there is great snorkeling, right from the shore. Go to Google Maps, find Little Cayman, and click the Satellite view. The barrier reef goes most of the way around the island. Some ideas:

- Little Cayman Beach Report can take you to the eastern-most end of the island, the snorkeling is great on that southern tip inside the reef (take care not to swim too far east, the current is strong.)

- LCBR can also take you directly across (north) the island to a nice beach. The snorkeling here is also very good but the water is deeper and more wavy.

- Inside the bay a little southeast of LCBR is Owen Island. We had some great snorkeling inside and outside (be careful!) the reef. Wait until the tide is high. Inside the reef we saw an eagle ray - he just kept gliding back and forth.

- The southwestern end is also good, just be careful because the reef is close to the surface and there are lots of sea urchins. We had full-body wetsuits.

Hope this helps!

we found the best snorkelling is at Jackson's point on the north side of the island, ca. 100m out from the beach, where the white bouys start. It's a 20 min cycle ride across the island from the south side. There's a beautiful reef with great coral, lots of fish, turtles and rays!
