My son would like to do some sailing, any suggestions?

HI...we are hoping to be able to visit the Caymans during Christmas vacation for a few days and was wondering if their is a good place for sailing? My son has been sailing for few years, so we are looking for a place(resort or condo) where this would be sure thing. I guess we are looking for a place with really good water activities and lots of palm tress for shade on the beach for Mom and Dad to sit back and watch! :)

We have been going to Cayman for years and truly I cannot recall really seeing boats of any type for rent by individuals (although I have never really looked). However in many other places, St. Lucia, B'dos, I have seen them with other water sports equipment on the beaches. I also don't believe that there are as many waverunnersin GC as there are in some other places. Why? Maybe because there are so many divers and dives sites close to shore -- I'm not sure. Although they may exist, some one else will have to point them out. Even if your son doesn't get to sail, the snorkeling etc is superior -- he will have a great time. Why not sign him up for a open water certification or even a resort course!!! Good luck!

Thanks Retrip we are going to the Caymans because of time restriants...its easy to get to from Miami. I have noticed some places indicate sailing, but you know, what you read is not always accurate. I did find a company that did sailing lessons and charters 1/2 day to full week but they do not start up till Jan 15. We will probably try the scuba diving as you suggested but it would be great if we could find a place for some sailing. :)

I have no personal experience with any of the above. I went to www.gotocayman.com and checked under watersports. The above included 'sailing' as part of their description but there were many others listed.

OH, should mention they are not tied into a resort as you were hoping. There are numerous watersport operations set up at hotels and other places for normal activites(such as jet skiing).

Thank you very much Filter14 that is wonderful!! I can't wait to check this out. My son's sailing abilities are novice in my eyes, although he would say otherwise, so we are just looking to keep him busy. It seems that most of the hotels that are offering any sailing are sadly pretty much all booked up so I guess I will start to look at condos, any recommedations?

We've stayed at Coralstone and Meridian while friends stay at Regal Beach Club. Depending on bedrooms needed(sounds like only 2), my choices may not work out. Regal Beach does have 2 bedroom units. But I can't recall if there are palm trees :)

I'd suggest looking at caymanvacations.com to see what each condo offers and their location for a starting point. You won't have any problem with watersport centers on SMB(I'm guessing that's the area you wanted). They are located at Westin, Ritz and Hyatt---anyone can use them.

Although I haven't stayed there, Plantana is another 1 + 2 bedroom condo that you may like. I admit I am partial to places that have pools beachfront. It's a little further north than the other locations I mentioned but the beach area is expansive and well kept.

Good luck!

Hi, have been checking all your suggestions and sadly most are booked so we will have to wait until March break. But while researching all the great suggestions, I did find an excellent outfit called Red Sail Sports that fits the bill for water activities. I believe they have several locations along Seven mile beach and have an excellent website, I was very impressed, just what I was looking for! I will definitely be looking for places to stay that are within walking distance of Red Sail Sports. Thanks again for all the suggestions! :)

We have been using Red Sail Sports for years and love them. They replace all their equipment regularly and are totally professional. We had both of our kids do multiple dive certification courses with them because of their attention to detail. Try looking at Lacovia. It is just up the beach from the Hyatt where the main Red Sail Beach Shop is. (Also have you tried the Hyatt Beach Suites?) Good luck!
