First timers-need some direction to start our condo search.

Hello! We are first time visitors and are an active 60ish couple looking for a condo on a gorgeous sandy beach (most important) with easy entry, not too family oriented (kids), with some privacy and quiet but easy access with a car to grocery stores and restaurants. Also do not want a place that caters to cruisers. Don't need or want to be right in the thick of things. Our budget would be around 350 per night in February. Thanks!

Condos and hotels maintain their beach/pool facilities for paying guests so you don't need to worry on that front. Based on what you have asked for central and northern SMB (Seven Mile Beach -- which is 5 1/2 miles long) would probably suit you best. There are tons of beautiful properties. . . Feb is still high season so the prices are near/at their premium. Start checking sites like caymanvacation.com, caymanvacations.com, cicondos.com, vrbo.com, etc and come back with questions if you see some possibilities.

Keep in mind that much of the NE has school break in February, usually around President's Day. I would recommend staying away from that time frame if you aren't interested in dealing with kids plus rates and availability for that time frame will much more difficult. Same for airfares.

We returned from a week at The Anchorage last week and loved being on the northern part of SMB. Our unit was clean and spacious and we loved the beach there. Other properties close by that you might look at are London House, Christopher Columbus, Discovery Point, The Commonwealth. These were some of the ones I remember from walking along the beach.

The Commonwealth is not a rental property. Ditto Mandalay next door and The Palms a bit to the north.

If you don't want to be in the midst of everything, the north Seven Mile Beach area would be my recommendation.

Check www.caydirect.com to see exact availability and prices for your dates - it gives you a really good overview of the available choices without having to guess.

Yes, and the rates in that area will not be too far off your preferred $350/night. You may have to up that just a bit.

doing a bit of research I came up with some possibilities that include VOG, Cayman Reef, Plantana, Coral Stone. Are these in the right location for me? Any opinions on the one that might be?

We stayed at Silver Sands a few weeks ago and it was perfect. It was on the northern part of seven mile beach. It was very reasonable in price also. Absolutely perfect beach area...and nice pool and grounds also. It wasnt crowded when we were there...not sure how it would be in February.

Villas of the Galleon is a nice choice, great beach and centrally located. No pool or screens, if that matters to you. Coralstone is very nice but does ( like all of the condos) attract families with children. Plantana's units and beach are nice but most of the units with a few exceptions, face the pool which could be full of children. Look at their website to see the layout and the direction each unit faces, choose with caution. Also, many oceanfront units there are set further back from the beach and while you pay for oceanfront, the view from the units in the back of the inverted V offer quite less than a direct ocean view. I would skip Cayman Reef for 2 reasons. The beach is narrow and you could experience spill over of some cruise passengers from the Royal Palms ( cruise centered beach club by day ) close by. I like Aqua Bay, you can distance yourself from pool noise, and Christopher Columbus also. We, too, are active 60's who don't enjoy being around running and screeching children.

Coralstone Club is nowhere near $350/night (it is MUCH more) in February, and even Plantana and VOG are quite a bit more than $350/night at that time. Make sure you are looking at the right season when you look at rates, as February is winter season where rates are higher than low summer season rates.

Take a look at the quieter, and less expensive, north section of Seven Mile Beach... and use CayDirect.com to see actual rates and availability for the dates you are looking for.
