Visited several jewelry shops during our stay... I'm always a little hesitate to buy overseas... have bought really good onyx pieces in the past and do own other really good jewelry pieces.. was surprised to see that several black coral pieces were more expensive than engagement ring reset with diamonds.. is this usual?? Is this stone so unusual to compensate the price of good diamond jewelry??

As a collector of black coral jewelry, specifically Bernard Passman's, I admit the prices are much higher in some cases than the same item made in diamonds. It all depends on whether you appreciate the workmanship or more importantly how much you're into black coral. Most times people just assume it's onyx when they see my jewelry. Most of my pieces also include diamonds and they're of the best quality.

Hello filter -- what a lovely thing to collect. I am always fascinated by his work. You are so right -- they are beautiful works of art and have nothing in comparison to random piecesof line jewelry. What a wonderful way to keep Cayman close when you're not there!!!!!

retrip, I have to admit the first piece of Passman jewelry I bought was in St Thomas. Most of it is from the Grand Cayman shop but I've even gotten some from their Vegas store.

The nice thing about their jewelry besides quality is that each piece comes with a certificate of authenticity with it's limited edition number. If there are diamonds included it lists the diamond weight as well as clarity and color. For the single diamond on one ring, I also received the GIA certificate. Also the very first pair of earrings I bought ended up with a chip and on my return visit I was able to exhange them for a new pair--no questions asked. Later I found out that I could actually contact them and mail them back for repair or replacement(to their working plant). Plus I've even upgraded a few pieces. I receive credit for the latest value which is either the same or higher than purchase price.
