Long Bay

Greetings! Wondering how to get there to snorkel. Is there road access? Thanks in advance!

Yes there is, and the snorkeling is some of the best on the island. The easiest way to find it is to keep going down the road that goes past Mahoe and Nail Bay. Just past the last Nail Bay houses - you will be past Nail Bay proper and will be seeing fewer signs for house - keep an eye for a dirt road going down hill. The paved road turns right there and begins to go uphill. There is a sigh for "Hog Heaven" just as the road turns right, so if you see that sign you have gone a tad too far. Go down the somewhat steep and rutted road. At the bottom of the road, keep immediately to the left and follow the dirt road in that direction until you see the ruins of a building. At this point you should see the easy access parking that leads to Long Bay. Couple of weeks ago we just left everything in the trunk of the car and backed in so we did not even have to setup on the beach. Probably the easiest beach access spot on the island.

The reef close to shore is mostly bleached, but keep swimming out until it becomes obviously very healthy. At that point head south and snorkel back towards Nail Bay, flowing the north-south line of the reef. Saw a pod of 10 squid, a turtle, an eel, and many varieties of fish out there on our last visit. While in that area, make sure you snorkel Mountain Trunk as well.

Thank you ACB! We did in fact snorkel Mountain Trunk yesterday and it was fantastic. Highlights were seeing my first queen triggerfish and a scrawled filefish. I've been scouring this forum and the info here is great. Thanks to the local experts!
