Hello people,

I wonder do you know if it would be possible to sit a driving test, theory and practical in Tortola within two weeks? Does it sound far too ambitous? I would like to find driving schools too, but cannot seem to find any on line..Please help. Coming to BVI in the next few weeks..

Do you drive already? Because if so, you won't need to take a test - we have the British system. You simply go and convert your existing license.

There are one or two driving schools but they aren't what you'd expect. There's the RELIABLE Driving School, tel: 494 3860, and the Traffic Department does its own testing.

when you rent a car, they ask you to buy a bvi licence for $10.00 I think is what I paid. It is good for a few years, can't remember how long, but you pay it on the spot, rent your vehicle and there you are.

Simple and easy.

Thank you for your reply, I do appreciate it. You see I have not taken my test in England due to laziness really, but I went to Africa and did a driving test there. I thought if I was coming to BVI I could combine that with a test so I could then take that back to England and then back to the BVI when I return. It does sound complicated.

Are you ex-pat or holiday makers? I wonder is there much of a communityand night life there? My other half is worried that it would be terribly boring...

Nope. No way. You have to do a cone test, and a written test and then a road test. If you don't pass one then you can't do the next one. I don't think anyone local could even schedule those in less than two weeks. TThere aren't any driving schools just driving instructors (two official ones as far as I know but there maybe more). You just need an international drivers licence to be able to hire a car here. Of course, there are islands, in the Windwards at least, where you can actually buy a driving licence.....

You could go to the car rental companies (International Motors, etc) and they will issue you a visitors temporary driver's license which is valid for three (3) months from the date of issuance for $10.

You need to present your country drivers license card as they will need the license number issued outside BVI.

I was supposed to get the permanent license but there was a bloody queue when I arrived at the Traffic department, so I just decided to have my second temporary driving license.

I assumed you had a licence, which is why I said you get a temp in tortola.

yikes, you better know how to drive. it would be scarey for tourists and locals alike.
