We plan to go to the grand marche after picking up our rental car. Will our car be safe from having the trunk broken into while shopping?

You will read many reminders on this topic. Someone stays in the car while the others shop; the risk is just not worth the consequences.

We picked up our rental car, drove to the hotel and left our luggage with the bellman and then went grocery shopping.

There are 2 rules to be safe while in St. Maarten: Never leave anything inside the car and never walk at night in dark places. Leave the luggage in the hotel firts and then go shopping.

The supermarkets are very safe. We pick up a few things on the way from the airport leaving one of us in the car with our stuff. The next day or so we will stop back to stock up for the week. Food prices are a little higher than US so just drink more of the duty free stuff !!!

Actually there is a new grocery store right at the bottom of the hill called Market Garden. It is a lot bigger and cleaner than Le Grand Marche.

Personally don't think it's cleaner. It always smells like fish. It's typically a bit more expensive for most things, but it is convenient for vacationers staying in the area. And certainly no where near as big as Grand Marche, Perhaps you are thinking of the smaller Gourmet Marche shops.

We did our initial grocery shopping at Grand Marche but found that Market Garden (just over the bridge in SImpson Bay) had better prices. It is right next to the Burger King.

We also shop for groceries after we pick up our rental car. Because we still have all our luggage in the car yet, I stay with the car while my wife does the grocery shopping. DO NOT leave the car unattended and go shopping for your groceries, with your luggage still in it.

We are on the island and have shopped in every gourmet marche and grand marche. No problem. It's a supermarket no different than anyplace else. You should drop your luggage off simply to create space for your groceries. From my experience here, you are more likely to get overcharged at the gas station than robbed.
