The victim in this case is our very own Barcann. A 30 year resident of the island.

So horribly sad.

I just wanted to let you know that I am OK.

Thankfully no one was hurt, but to experience a robbery at mid day in your dentist office is just bizarre.

My experience could have been so much worse, but it certainly was a wake up call for me.

this is a sad topic for me to approach but i must share my thoughts with the people on this site. i am an international journalist and photographer. i lived on three caribbean islands, st. kitts, nevis and st. maarten, for a total of five years, working for newspapers and/or magazines. without a shadow of a doubt, st. maarten is the most dangerous and violent island i have ever visited in the caribbean.

i have written about and witnessed horrible, violent crimes committed against both tourists and locals. the police of st. maarten -- corrupt. the immigration officers of st. maarten -- corrupt! the government of st. maarten -- CORRUPT.

criminals that are deported or expatriated from the island can come back anytime they want, simply by handing their passport to an immigration officer with a $100 bill tucked away in it.

i had a close friend who emerged from the Atlantis gambling casino on st. maarten one night after winning $1200. he was acccosted in the parking lot by two black men on a motorscooter, robbed, shot and left for dead. he left the island for the states with a bullet lodged near his spine and vowed to never return to the so-called 'friendly island' of st. maarten-st. martin.

st. maarten's problem is dutch law, which prohibits anyone except police to legally own weapons. security guards in banks and casinos or jewelry stores on front street are not permitted to carry guns. i covered numerous stories where shotgun-toting criminals would enter a casino or a bank, rob everybody in the place and then escape with everyone's cash and valuables. dutch law MUST be changed to protect visitors as well as locals.

my own personal advice to travelers is this -- stay away from st. maarten and curacao. if you want to visit the caribbean, go to the smaller islands...berry island, dominica or another island that is owned and governed by the british, the french or the americans. until the dutch get their act in gear, avoid the dutch-owned islandss. it could save your life.

why should his post be deleted???? the original crime is a bit old but crime itself on sxm seems to be growing! what should be deleted imo are posts from people who can't acknowledge that there is a crime issue on sxm. this is a forum for travelers to get ALL info...not just that seen through rose colored glasses!
