Local Shopping

This is our first trip to St.Lucia, are the locals as pushy and aggressive as in some other caribbean islands. And can anyone recommend some shopping areas.

I am currently in St lucia, the locals are not that pushy, we have only been approached a handful of times in the past month, a polite no thank you sent them away.

Cant really give any advice on shopping as we have not done a lot, however a day trip to Martinique for the shopping was great.

The locals will approach you at all of the touristy stops, but they do take no for an answer. St Lucia is not really known for outstanding shopping. The Castries Market is worth checking out for a couple of hours. You will be able to find whatever souveniours, trinkets you might want to take home here, also spices and hot sauces.

There are some duty free shops nearby the Market. We only went to Port Seraphine and weren't that impressed, but we also weren't looking for any big ticket items and are not big shoppers, so take that into consideration.

If you are staying in the north of the island, there are some interesting shops at both the Rodney Bay Marina -and the mall there. In Castries, do check out the local market for spices, locally made baskets, and the "everywhere, always Tshirt". At Place Carenage, there is a pottery shop -- all handpainted pieces by a local artist -- and also Bagshaw Studios (silk screening)or go to their studios for a tour. In the south, there is a wonderful craft shop along the road between Cannaries and Souffriere -- more in the town of Choisel.

You wont get much hassel we shopped lots and no one bothered us when touring we were asked once or twice but as above a firm and polite NO sent them away.

Shopping malls are much the same with local produce in supermarkets and some have that touristy feel about them.

I purchased some v good quality cotton shorts there for much the same i would pay at home. Dont carry lotws of bling about with you though use common sense and you will be okay.

Try going to the local stores rather than the tourist place like point seraphine (where the cruise liners come in)

On the way to Gros Islet from Castries there is a quaint shopping mall on the right called gablewoods. The sea island shop there has some nice clothes and desinger handbags and other intersting techy shops for the men.

Rodney shopping mall is okay too and theres an ice cream parlour and internet cafe nearby so if the wife wants to shop while u surf its handy.

However they are very small malls in comparison to those in Florida.

all the best
