Off to Halcyon on 27th Nov

Hi

I am off to Sandals Halcyon on the 27th for 1 week, should of been going to Secrets Excellence in Cancun but the flights have been cancelled. Just a few questions that I have. Is the duty free any good at the airport for perfumes or am I best getting them in town? Will I be OK taking US dollars?

Lastly what Excursions would you recommend taking around the island.

Taking US dollars would be fine.

Excursions - friends took the helicopter tour of the island when we were there in Mar 05 and loved it - we'll be taking it when we go back in Feb 06.

We booked a private driver/van to take us on an island tour. There were 6 of us and it cost 35.00 US per person, 6-7 hour tour and Yason (Yason's cabs - phone 258-6112) supplied the cool, refreshing beverages and the commentary/history. We went to the Pitons, visited the sulphur volcano, the botanical gardens, drove through part of the rain forest. Quite informative and enjoyable. Sandals offers this tour as well but it is twice the price.

The snorkelling excursions that are included in your Sandals packages are great. If you go more than once during your week - book different times for your snorkelling tour as they go to different locations in the mornings and afternoons.

The "Jump Up" in Gros Islet sounded like a lot of fun - and the Fish fry on Friday night too sounded good. We flew out of the airport at the south end of the island and I found they didn't have a wide selection of duty free perfumes at this airport. You might do better in Castries.

Enjoy.

Perhaps we will see you there. We are going from 11/22-11/29 and staying at the Regency.

Hello flossy24

I just got back for Sandals Halcyon last night, the resort was wonderful! We were also supossed to be going to Secrets resort but had to change to Sandals, as long as you know the differences before you go there you won't be disapointed. There is no room service and the only room with a mini bar in it is the honeymoon suit, you don't have a hamock outside you room & there are no hot tubs in the rooms.

I thought I would be disapointed after researching Secrets for so long but I was not disapointed at all. The food there was great and the beach bar is open for late night snacks from 10-3am so you never went hungry, There was no mini bar so we went to the gift shop and bought a few bottles of water to keep in the room. You don't spend much time in your room other then to sleep and getting ready for dinner.

We did the snorkeling that was included & we took the sail boats out at the resort. We booked a sunset cruise but then cancelled because I wasn't feeling well. We planned to do a few tours but had so much fun at the resort that we didn't want to leave it other than to travel to the other resorts for dinner. We brought US money and had no problem using it anywhere. You don't need to bring that much $$ everything at the resort, tours, gift shop...ect can be charged to your room. We brought $1000 Us and spent maybe $300 or $400. It all depends if you are leaving the resort. The perfume & Liquor at the airport was pretty cheap but there are only a few stores, all the stores took credit. I paid Us money with no problem.

There is a island tax fee you pay when leaving the country it's $21 US and you have to pay cash, you pay it when you check in at your airline. Let me know if you have any other questions.

I recomend traveling to the Regency for dinner, book as soon as you arrive because the 3 that take reservations fill up quickly. The Grande was pretty but I thought was too quiet no music or pool activities we left there after a feww hours. I'm hoping to write a review this week.

Have a wonderful trip :)

newlywed905, so glad you reported back, and everything worked out well for you! I too, think the details of what one could expect at this resort, avoids disappointments.

I know the recent updating of the rooms at Halcyon, was said to have been a fresh coat of a pretty green colored paint. Did it look to you that any updating was done to the bathrooms? What type of patio furniture on the balconies do they have now? Have they added ice buckets in the rooms?

your quote:

"The Grande was pretty but I thought was too quiet no music or pool activities we left there after a feww hours"

I have been finding it interesting that some reports, have been coming in lately that the activity and entertainment, level at Halcyon was more then, people were finding at the other resorts. When, it is the Halcyon that is most often referred as the get away from it all, kind of place.

Yes it looked like new green paint in the rooms, I don't think the bathroon looked like it was recently done over but I could be wrong, it wasn't the best bathroom and certainly not the worst that I've seen. There is an ice bucket in the room with glasses & a coffee maker. On the patio we had a table with 2 chairs.

We never spent too much time in the room because there were so many activities going on that we didn't want to miss anything. The playmakers there had so much energy and were so much fun that we wanted to participate in anything they had to offer. There was a quiet pool that you could go to if you wanted to relax and not be bothered. But the main pool was so entertaining. I'd say between 11-5 there was pool & beach games going on, then it was somewhat quiet because people were getting ready and then going to dinner. The resort would pick up again around 9pm when night time activities would start up. There was casino night, talent show, lovers game, karoke, broadway night ect.... that would go until 11pm. Then at 11 the Disco was open until 1 and the piano bar was open until 3. The piano bar & disco weren't packed but there were always people there having fun. I think around 11pm most people were tired from drinking & being in the sun all day.

I think you can make this resort be what you want it to be. If you want to go there and party & have fun you can. If you want to just relax & get sun sun you can also. We choose to be active and have fun. We were on our honeymoon as most people there are also but in a way with all the drinking & dancing & playing games I feel like I just came back from an adult spring break.

I would say the average age group there was pretty much between 25-55 of course there were exceptions but I would say wthat as the average.

Fun...Fun...Fun....

I didn't go the the regency during the day, we were only there at night for dinner, it looked nice, they have the best food at Armando's. The Regency is huge but I think I would go crazy taking shuttles everywhere.

Like I said above when we went to the Grande I heard them play 1 song other than that it was quiet no pool activities, no games. We went with 2 other couples to the Grande that we met at our resort and we all wanted to go back to Halcyon, we were all drinking and having fun and we felt like everyone was staring at us because we were too loud so were trying to be quiet so people would stop shooting dirty looks and we deceided it just wasn't the place for us, it felt like a country club there. But it could have just been the day we were there, who knows.

Of the 3 resorts I highly recomend the Halcyon, but I think it's one of thoose places where you have to stay there to appreciate it.

Hello! We also just got back from Halcyon on Saturday night (the 12th) Of the 3 resorts, we are VERY happy with our choice as well. We had the 2nd level room. Premimum, I think. It was clean and nice -- not spectacular, but no complaints. The best parts were the grounds and the people. Both the guests and the staff were wonderful. Everyone was very friendly and the grounds were absolutely gorgeous. The others just seemed like huge hotels to me. At the Regency, some had to take shuttles to get around the property! I'm not sure about the Grande, but it was huge too. As for excursions, we did the shopping trip and the Souferier Excursion (it was the botanical gardens, volcano stop, snorkling and boat tour.) It was worth it, but we did have a lot of rain that day. ENJOY YOUR TRIP!!!!
