Safe to rent a car and explore? |
|
My husband and I are very adventourous travelers. Would it be safe to say renting and jeep and treking through rainforest and finding waterfalls is safe on St. Lucia? Thanks? Any advice on best places to see? |

Yes, and I highly recommend it. Just remember, they drive on the opposite side compared to us here in the US. Mike in Tulsa

Hi, We have just come back from St Lucia (Wednesday 7th March), we rented a 4x4 for a week through the hotel which was comparable it cost about $600 including all fees and driving licience, we stayed in the North, you really need transport to get around, it is so hot making walking uncomfortable, there are also not really any footpaths (a 4x4 is a must out there with there sheer hills and hairpin bends), there is really only one road around the island, and is currently undergoing major roadworks all over the island due to the forthcoming cricket world cup, there are some very breathtaking views, it is a bit scary to start with as there are sheer drops with no barriers, and the hill gradiants are very steep, but non the less a well worthwhile experience. I do not think you are allowed to trek through the rainforest on your own, we were told there are only two rainforest walks, which you can get a tour to or drive yourself, we drove ourselves, unfortunately our guide was not really that good, he did not really tell us anything which we found disappointing, then asked us if we wanted to see some St Lucian parrots up some steps (over 300 of them), and I did not see any (a lot of pain for no gain). Regarding best places to see, that really depends on what you want to do and see, although the island is quite small it takes a while to get around due to the hills, and you will want to keep getting out to see the views. We drove around all the island, which you can do in a day, again it depends what you want to do and see. I would also recomend taking some trips by boat, we went whale and dolphin watching, we were going to go on the Brig Unicorn but unfortunately it had to be cancelled, engine problems, we also went scuba diving with Frogs (who were fantastic). I've probably gone on more than you really wanted, but I hope it helps. Any other questions I would be more than happy to answer for you if I can. Regards, hope you have a good time.

beach631.............If you feel safe on Long Island you'll be fine in St Lucia! You already know to use common sense! We stuck to well traveled trails when trekking (only because I am paranoid and read they have boas!). The island is beautiful. The food is without a doubt some of the best I have had in the Caribbean and the people are as friendly to you as you are to them. Don't miss the area around the Pitons. Snorkeling is great. We did not have a bad meal in Rodney Bay and the fish fry was fun. Have a Great Trip!
