What to do in Gustavia St, Barts

We will be on a cruise ship and will be spending two days in Gustavia. We are interested in snorkeling. Any suggestions?

There are lots of threads on this forum with ideas for day trips from cruise ships. Search "cruise" or "day trip" in the search box above the forum. Make sure you are in the general St Barth forum; this was posted in the Gustavia one. You'll get more results that way.

Gustavia is the main town on St Barth. You won't find any snorkeling there, but you will find lots of shops and restaurants :-) Regarding snorkeling, St Barth doesn't have any spectacular spots so you might want to think about something else.

What kinds of things do you like to do? Are you willing to rent a car?

Thanks for the tip on snorkeling. Really didn't want to rent a car. The ship stays in port over night, and they have snorkeling listed as one of the activities. Apparently, there is St. Barth Marine Park, but have visited other Marine Parks and was disappointed.

We have snorkeled all over the island and it is just OK. Depending on weather, visibility can be an issue at some of the better snorkeling spots. For example, my husband saw 4 turtles at St Jean but the water was REALLY cloudy due to the wind. Some of the better snorkeling spots (Colombier for example) are hard to get to without a car or at least hiring a driver.

The tender will drop you in Gustavia, where you can shop and eat. There is a small but pretty beach in walking distance. It is called Shell Beach, as it is make of tiny shells.

You could take a cab to St Jean, which is a very pretty beach with restaurants and shops in walking distance.

Our first trip to St Bart's was via a day trip on a cruise. I highly suggest you rent a car and enjoy the entire island. Get a good map and just drive to all the areas and beaches. If we hadn't rented a car, we wouldn't be getting ready to go on our 5th trip there!

Please recommend a service that provides a car and driver for one day..a Friday in January. I will be arriving on a Wind Surf cruise at Gustavia. Regards Martin

I also suggest you rent a car. Going by taxi for the day will be more expensive, and not nearly as much fun.

With a car you can enjoy Saint Barth's secluded beaches and beautiful vistas from the hills. You can appreciate the charm of the island and get a glimpse of the spectactular villas. You can shop in Gustavia. Also plan for lunch in Saint Jean beach for great people watching.

And don't worry. The island is small and easy to get around.
