6 months with kids - health and safety?

We have the opportunity to spend 6 months in Montserrat from mid-November on. We will be with our (by then) 10 month old and 3.5 year old. Montserrat appeals for many reasons (beaches, people, safety, crime etc), although we have never been before. However, our only real concern is volcanic activity.

Should we be at all concerned? We have been researching the issues from the MVO website etc, but am insterested to hear the opinions of others.

The house we are considering letting is in Zone A, just north of the gate to zone B, in the Beachetts area. Would we be better off further north on the island?

The mountain is being constantly monitored by the MVO. I have been going to the island regularly, sometimes with our children, since the recent eruption and at no time even at the height of volcanic activity did we feel endangered! Enlightened but never endangered.

Our children came out twice at that time and went back to school in the UK with a better knowledge of what makes the world tick. as well as having experienced the people of another culture. You will not regret going, the only problem you will have is working out when you can return.....................!

The volcano should not be a consideration where you are staying from the standpoint of safety. You may get some dusting should the volcano become active, however. If the villa that you are renting has a pool, this would be a larger concern for me given the ages of your children. Good luck.

Keep in mind that the Exclusion zone is the zone that eminately qualified and respected volcanologists have agreed would be the FURTHEST possible extent that the volcano, even at it's most active, could affect. Zone A is perfectly safe, and even zone B and C are only a problem when it rains, because of the lahares (floods of ash).
