Trip Report: Vieques June 12-13, 2013

On Wednesday we flew from Isla Grande to Vieques...an amazing flight with very picturesque views. We rented a Jeep from Island Car Rental, and they picked us up at the airport and quickly had us on our way. We were at Banana's Guest house about 30 minutes before they opened, and Hope graciously allowed us to leave our one bag in the office while we explored. We took our first dip by the pier across the street, and then quickly headed to the reserve.

First stop: Pata Prieta (Secret Beach) This was our favorite as the water was the cleanest, and same with the sand. We explored the far right side of the beach, marveling at the rock stacks and barely noticed the total of about 8 others on the beach.

Second Stop: Playa Plata (Silver Beach) Nice and only a total of 4 others while we were there. The huts were great!! Swam here and it was pretty calm.

Third Stop: La Chiva (Blue Beach) We just stopped here to say we had. Wasn't that great...so we walked along the shore a few minutes then headed out.

Fourth Stop: Navio. Amazingly pretty. We climbed the rocks on the left side, but ya gotta be careful b/c they can gash you.

Pre Beach: We ate at Banana's (Tostones and Cheese sticks, and Dirty Banana's) Food was okay.

Dinner: We ate at Duffy's. I had a tasty burito, and my girl had crab, which she enjoyed. The beer selection was great.

That evening we took the Bio Bay trip with Vieques Adventure Co. Highly recommend them b/c of the clear canoes. I popped the question on the bay, and the night was just so magical on the bay that I couldn't imagine a more perfect way to ask for her hand in marriage. She said yes, so she didn't have to find her own way home!!

We had celebratory drinks at Lazy Jack's after the bay, and Francis, whom had served us earlier in the day, was off this time and bought us some shots. She was the best!! So were her Rum Punches!!

Since it was a week night, the place wasn't as rockin' as I had read about on here. A.) No loud music to disturb our sleep...we stayed at Banana's in the room #5, which was closest to the restaurant, and had no issues. B.) We were not woken up early by roosters, as I had also read about on here.

All-in-all, what a great get away from touristy spots. Beaches were as beautiful as you are going to read about on here, and the horses all over were great!! Oh yea, forgot to mention that if you drive past the airport on 200, heading west, you will see the Ceiba Tree, which was jaw dropping!! What a beautiful tree, I had no idea that roots grew like that!

Hope everyone traveling to Puerto Rico will take the time and effort to make it to this gem of an island. Quite an experience!

First of all, congratulations!!

Sounds like you had a great time- you were certainly active! Glad you managed to see so much in such a short time! Nice to hear someone commenting on a stay at Bananas, too, and we're glad to hear it was a good one.

Hi,

Congratulations! I read your great review. Are you a snorkeler? If so, can you tell me which beaches provide the best snorkeling.

Thanks for any help

Thanks everyone...I am trying to figure out how to post pics but not seeing how to do so...I used a second ring as a stand in during the bio bay, then once we got back into our room I proposed a second time. As for snorkeling, I didn't really do it, I have before, but would just be able to tell you that on my stay, Pata Prieta had the cleanest water, and a reef at the right. I saw two doing their snorkeling on Playa Plata at the far left side (when I say sides, I am looking out to sea from the beach, hope that's clear :) ) Wasn't terribly dirty there, prob that or Navio were the same clearness in water.
