New Years 2014 and El Dia de los Reyes

In an Expedia airfare fit of madness, we booked ourselves for a trip to Puerto Rico 12/31-1/8. We will be staying with our 14 year old twins in OSJ at El Convento from 12/31 until 1/5, and moving over to Culebra for the remaining 3 nights. We cannot change El Convento and worry that OSJ will be a crazy street party for New Years Eve. I have read about fireworks - where do people gather to view them? Is there a massive street party, and if so, where is it? How much of the city is holiday during New Years Day? And is there a public 3 Kings celebration that we will miss if we move to Culebra? Thanks in advance for your wisdom and advice.

Most of the NYE celebrations will be in Condado and Isla Verde. OSJ will not be as crowded, but there will still be stuff to do. No crazy street party, though.

Fireworks are usually by the Condado Lagoon, and can be seen from OSJ.

The three kings celebrations are in OSJ predominantly. Culebra might be crowded as locals might go for the long weekend.

Could you elaborate regarding 3 Kings? Our Spanish friends have only informed us regarding the gift giving tradition. What are the public celebrations? Thanks.

There will be music, activities for children, artesanal crafts and food vendors spread across OSJ. A list of events will not be out until a few weeks before the, day.

Some towns have their local celebrations. Post in the Culebra forum, that maybe a local could provide more details as to if there are any public celebrations.

Many families have their own celebration, so you should see if there is any public celebration in Culebra..

If you decide to stay in the main island of P.R., then I'd suggest you drive down to Juana Diaz, a southern town that holds a traditional celebration on the morning of Jan. 6. The drive is about 1:15 hrs. from San Juan, all highway. Aside from the traditional parade, there is yummy street food and local arts and crafts.

Here's a blurb from an old N.Y. Times article:

Three Kings Day has one of its most storied celebrations in Juana Díaz, Puerto Rico, a town of 50,000 about 70 miles from San Juan. The city welcomes about 30,000 visitors for the two-day festival, which has been held since 1884 and features folk music, sales of crafts and festive foods, and the big event, a parade, outdoor Mass and pageant. About 2,000 people dressed as shepherds herald the arrival of the kings - local men clad in the brocaded robes and capes of Melchior, Balthazar and Gaspar. Anyone can take part, said William Santiago, president of the board of directors of the festival, who plays Melchior. "All you gotta do is dress as a shepherd and come early in the morning to register."

Be sure to find yourself a nice safe place to celebrate New Years Eve - don't be out on the streets at midnight. Every year, someone gets killed from bullets being shot into the air (fireworks, PR style).

People do shoot in the air at midnight if they are at home, but that will not happen in the tourist area. But it is always a good idea to be indoors.
