San Juan for posh parents

I have some rather affluent in-laws that will be in San Juan with us. Picture Frazier Crane rather than Donald Trump or Princess Diana rather than Paris Hilton and you get the picture. First, the hotel: I know they would not adore the Marriott or the Hilton with throngs of people on the beach and a lot of noise from kids or the Carnival cruise crowd. Secondly, someone mentioned San Juan and going to Burger King or Subway which would not appeal.

So, what are the smaller, elegant hotels with a beach and a pool that don't necessary appeal to a lot of kids or the party crowd? Also, what about restaruants? Those can be loud and fun and perhaps dressy and nice but no chains or no t-shirt type places? Can anyone help?

Michaeldavid. The safe choices for you are the Ritz or he El Convento. The Ritz is on the beach in Isla Verde. It is close to the airport, but it is generally agreed to be the most upscale hotel in San Juan. There are those who complain that its not up to Ritz standards., but you won't be bothered by spring break types. The El Convento is a beautiful boutique hotel in Old San Juan. its in the center of the old town and not near the beach., so its more of an intown experience and not a resort. The next best optionis the El San Juan which is the venue with the most elegant and adult feel to it. Its lobby is transformed on weekend nights to an elegant and cool nightclub and it has a very decent casino. Also it has a great pool and fine beach As far as I am concerned the Delano is South Beach is an ESJ wannabe. The drawback is that years of dubious underfunded ownership (Wyndham) has left many of its rooms in degraded condition and the new owners LXR are due to start renovations. The best way to get a good room at the ESJ is to book through the casino. Next door is the Intercontinental. Its a decent older hotel with a great pool and the same beach as the ESJ. Its cheaper and the rooms are somewhat in better shape. Despite the presence of fast food outlets in San Juan, there is no shortage of great restaurants. Some are located in Old San Juan, some in the Condado area and some in Isla Verde. My currrent favorite is Chayote located on Miramar Ave.

Thanks PR Visitor. That is a big help. What about the Water Club? It seems rather upscale? What about a small, elegant beach hotel? Is there such a thing?

The Ritz may be the best answer. I did forget about that hotel.

You can also consider the Horned Dorset Primavera in Rincon. It has a policy of no minors, not v, no radios... it's where very important or famous people go when they want to disconect from the world. It's a very secluded place with extreme fine dinning. Also, not many locals now about this place, so it's kindda off limmits, 'cause you can not enter the premises to take a look, only if you have dinner reservations or are a paying guest.

I think you understand what type of people choose this Magnificent property. Read some reviews here in TA about this place. Also here is their web page:

The Water Club has been getting a lot of bad reviews lately....it caters to the young and the hip, I stayed there last year and didn't have any problems but I wouldn't consider it for someone with refine taste....I think the best bet in San Juan would be the Ritz.....

Regarding restaurants, there is plenty to choose from.....

You have gotten some great info. The Horned Dorset is beautiful

If you need something closer to San Juan, also try Las Casitas at The El Conquistador. For more info www.elconresort.com

Chic restaurants in San Juan abound:

In Old San Juan try one of the Robert Trevino restauants ( he's been featured in Iron chef America on the Food Network: www.oofrestaurants.com. Also try Carli's Cafe Concierto( www.carlisworld.com) small, intimate, great food and wonderful smooth jazz. Amadeus and the restaurants at the El Convento hotel are also favorites.

In Isla Verde you can try Tangerine at the Water Club www.waterclub.com,

Momoyama( InterContinental Hotel for Teppenyaki).

In Condado: I like Great Taste for dim sum. Buenos Ayres ( Argentinian food), Ramiro's, Miro Marisqueria.

In Ocean Park: Pamela's.

P.S. Some of these places require reservations.

Good luck.

Definitely the Ritz-Carlton. I stay there on business and there seem to be a lot of folks like your in-laws who stay there. It's off by itself and has a nice beach.

Old San Juan is very nice but there's a lot of the cruise crowd that hangs out.

These are excellent suggestions. It sounds like the Ritz is where they need to be. The convento is also very good since it has the old Spanish colonial feel to it but they did want a beach. Sometimes the Ritz can be a bit "anywhere USA" but the one in San Juan from what I have read seems to be quite nice. Thanks again for the restaurant reccs. as well.

The Horned Dorset may be fun for a night away from San Juan. How does one get there? Is there a public transport of any kind or do we need to rent a car? How long does it take from San Juan?
