thinking of staying at the caribe or el san juan??

I know there are other posts on this question but they are older, and the caribe is renovated. My wife and I and our one year old are coming to puerto rico for 6 nights and are trying to figure out where to stay. people say the el san juan is a fancier hotel and has nightlife, but the caribe id closer to the old city and easier to get around. We will have our one year old with us, so that can make a difference on things, and we probably will just rent a car for the days we want to go on excursions, etc.

anyone have any ideas?

El San Juan is in Isla Verde, near the airport. It is good for beach time, gambling, and nigthlife. There is not much of sightseeing.

El Caribe Hilton is in Puerta de Tierra, between Condado and Old San Juan. There is a beach, the in-house entertainment at the hotel, and a passive park. If you walk from there to Old San Juan you will find good spots for nice sea view pictures.

Please take note that the sidewalk along that way is paved with some kind of cobblestones. Walking the distance pushing a stroller could be tiresome for you and for the little passenger if the vehicle does not have good shock absorbers. You can always cross the street to the other sidewalk but for pictures you will need to stay in the other side.

From the Caribe Hilton you can walk to Condado, closer than Old San Juan.

The Caribe is more isolated. Yes, you can walk to Condado or Old San Juan during the day. TheCaribe is a nice property but you are confined to the expensive restauurants on site. More choices at the El San Juan. Why not look at the Marriott Stellaris on Condado. Childtren's pool. Many restauauts to walk to. A 75 cent bus ride to Old San Juan. All 3 have a rental cars on site or across the street.

Old San Juan should keep you busy for two days if you want to explore without hassle. One day is enough if you want to just walk around to take pictures.

There are daytrips you can take for the rest of your stay. Since you have a young visitor, it must be to easily accessible destinations. Some places like the rainforest are, but some areas there are not that much. One of the experts here has a site with descriptions of daytrips, I can not remember who he is. He will very likely answer you as well.

Look at the Conrad also. It is on Condado (across the lagoon fron the Caribe) and has a children's beach on the lagoon ( a Public Park next to the Contad which doubles as the Conrad's beach). A large choice of restaurants to walk to and a Casino in the Hotel.

Probably not as high. But the Conrad has a children's beach (as does the Caribe). The Conrad you can walk off site with at least a dozen restauants within stroller distance. Less at the El San Juan, none at the Caribe except a Subway as you enter. When we were at the Caribe before and after a cruise the nightlife was non-existant. More so at the Conrad and no one can beat the El San Juan for nightlife. I am keeping in mind you have a 1 year old and want to be able to be close to Old San Juan in recommending the Conrad. We stayed at the Conrad 3 times when it was a Whydham. Beutiful view from Oceanfront windows. The Conrad has a decent Casino although not as fancy as the El San Juan.
