It's worth it you are driving yourself. It's a nice drive and a cute place to shop. But taxi will be very expensive. The outlets are located about an hour's drive from San Juan.

There ae a lot of excellent bargains at the outlets, but as Paris said, the Barceloneta (Prime) outlets are located around an hour from San Juan, which makes the trip costly, if you are not renting a car. It is an easy driving trip to them, all through highways.

A much closer outlet mall is in Canovanas which is about 20 - 30 minutes east from the airport. While not as "cute" as the one out west, it is as large and has mostly the same stores. A taxi would still be expensive - I would guess $40 - 50 each way from Condado. It is right on the way if you are going to visit the rain forest.

The taxi fare to Barceloneta will be about $80 one-way, while the taxi fare to Canovanas will be about $46 one-way. Your taxi fare will wipe out any potential savings you might find at the outlet mall.

The Prime Outlets in Barceloneta is larger, with a wider selection of stores, than the Route 66 Outlet Mall (formerly Belz Outlet Mall) in Canovanas.

The big difference is that The Outlets in Canovanas are enclosed in a fully air conditioned building and the food court (IMO) is better at Canovanas..

The ones in Barceloneta are arranged like the ones in NY, buildings between "streets". Everytime you go out of an A/C store, you get the outside heat.

If we are going to Biobay, which of the shopping outlets would be better.

We are from the UK would these outlet malls be anything better (cheaper) than what we shall see when we get to NY or NJ? in otherwords worth a visit.

If you're going to the biobay in Fajardo (Laguana Grande), the Route 66 Outlet Mall @ the intersection of Route 3 and exit 14 (currently the last exit) on Route 66 will be the closest.

I think both of the outlet malls carry about the same stuff, at about the same prices, as outlets in the States. And, you'll pay 7% sales tax on clothes here (versus NJ where there is no sales tax on clothing).

Their wirthines depends on what you are looking for. For instance IMO and experience , clothes for cooler weather are liquidated cheaper at the outlets in PR than in NY, even with the 7% tax. Summer clothes are about the same, although you always find great buys. Then there are the extra %discounts over the already dicounted prices... which make deals even cheaper.

For europeans, the goods will be cheap... just had a cousin from Spain and she finished going back to Spain with 5 pieces of luggage and even with the extra luggage weight money she had to pay, she saved $$$$$.

We are going on a cruise leaving San Juan 8pm Sat 24 Nov 12. I would like to do Christmas shopping during the day. Where should we go for the best bargains - bearing in mind its post Thanksgiving and should be sales everywhere. We would be mainly looking for clothing for grandchildren and Polo / Tommy Hilfiger / etc

Is it worth paying taxi fares, or should we take public transport. We are staying the previous night in an airport hotel, so would need to dump luggage on ship first about 11am and leave about mid day getting back about 6pm.

Your suggestions are welcomed

The Belz Outlet mall in Canovanas is probably your best bet. It has most of the usual shops like Polo, Nike, etc. It is at the intersection of Rt 66 and Rt 3. It is a 15 - 20 minute taxi ride to get there from the airport and about a $46 fare. I would not recommend public transport. You might also consider renting a car which might save some money.

During the Christmas season (Thanksgiving to Jan 6), every mall in PR is mobbed beyond belief.
