Are the cliffs a suitable area for solo travellers? |
|
Hi Everybody! I am planning to visit Negril during Easter break some time around April 8-April 15th. This will be my first trip to Jamaica. I am also planning to go there alone(unless I can talk my friend into taking time off of her job to go with me...lol). I am really torn beteween which area to stay in. The cliffs appear to be a very beautiful area. However, the impression that I have gotten about the cliffs is that the area seems great for people(mostly couples) looking for privacy and seclusion away from the crowds at the beach area. Thus cliffs seems like the perfect place to unwind a bit. However, my concern is that as a solo female traveller(in her late 30's) I might be a bit out of place if I stay along the cliffs instead of staying at the beach . So my questions are as follows: 1.)What are the advantages and disadvantages of staying along the cliffs if you are travelling solo?
2.)Are there any resorts/villas/hotels along the cliffs that attract a fair amount of solo travellers? I am considering staying at the following places(beteween 50-80 dollars per night): Blue Cave(seems to be more couple/family oriented) LTU Villas Any other suggestions or advice that you provide will be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Carol Report as inappropriate |

Blue Cave doesn't allow children so is not family oriented at all. I fI were flying solo, I'd stay there...quiet, nice, secure yard, friendly people, easy to meet people around the AM coffee pot. The cliffs have less hassle/hustle/buy-this-buy-that than the beach, because there are fewer tourists up there. Yet walking to the beach is not that far (but be aware, no shoulder, winding road, fast cars). I guess it depends what you're looking for but I might lean towards the cliffs if I were solo. We stay on the cliffs most visits and there are plenty of solo travellers. It depends on what you are looking for and how social you want to be. The beach is busy with lots of people to watch and meet. There's more privacy on the cliffs to swim, read & sun with very little interruption. Blue Cave Castle is great and since they do not have a restaurant or bar it is very private, but there are many places to go nearby. Xtabi has the restaurant and bar, so there would be more opportunity to socialize at the hotel. Personally, if I were going without my husband I would stay on the cliffs and visit the beach when in the mood. Alot of the men in Negril (especially on the beach) are too attentive to female travellers - to put it mildly! I have never stayed at your other choices. Good luck with your plans - hope your friend decides to go along! Report as inappropriate

I have to agree! The cliffs would be (and always are) my first choice. The beach is a wonderful place to visit, but it's nice to come back to serenity. The BCC is a wonderful choice. All of the guests there would be great company and the price for what you get is such a value. Amazing swimming is literally at your feet and there are plenty of places walking distance to grab a bite to eat or a cold drink. Whichever you choose, have a fabulous time! Hello Carol, As a first timer to Jamaica, I would highly suggest that you take the safety factor into comsideration. Once you become familiar with all aspects of the culture, lifestyle and foods, then spread your wings and stay anywhere. The owners of this hotel are the key to your quick training period. tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g147313-i70-k26520… Have fun and please come back and share your experiences with us.

Thanks to all who have responded thus far. I am feeling better about staying along the cliffs. Still haven't made up my mind as to what resorts/hotels to stay in yet(I like BCC, Xtabi and Ocean Edge). The SeaStar Inn looks like a nice place to stay as well. When making my travel plans, I didn't realize that the rates drop after the 15th April. Thus, I might push my travel dates back to late June to capitalize on the savings. :) Report as inappropriate

You may want to give SamSara a "look-see" - clean, comfortable rooms with pretty views looking out to the sea. Swimming pool, jacuzzi, bar, restaurant on premises. Daily Sunset Happy Hour from 4-7...is get-together time with fellow travelers, seems more singles than couples from what I've seen lately. Friendly staff :) Mini-Market (M&L) is right down the road in case you need any snacks, beer, soda, water, etc...Restaurants nearby...Choices, Xtabi, PeeWees, Jus Natural. LOTL PS. They offer FREE shuttle to the beach, too! Report as inappropriate

Try Mirage Resort. Its very beautiful with lovely room, good snorkling and a warm and friendly staff and security. Report as inappropriate

Chitown: I'm also a single female traveller and I think you will love it on the cliffs. The above posts have great things to say. I haven't stayed on the cliffs, but I did walk from downtown Negril to 3 Dives so I could walk along the road, see the sights and take lots of candid photos of the scenery. Walkingn along that road is definitely an experience, but I am the adventurous type. I walked on theh side facing oncoming traffic so they would see me first. You should alsos take a ride to 7 mile beach and check it out, so you can form your own opinion of where to stay next time (I'm sure yopu've already thought of that!) Go with your gut feelign about which resort to stay at; you can't go wrong! Report as inappropriate
