Hello Juli, I posted a reply on another thread. But I dont mind going over the details again.
quote:Johnny, do they acknowledge Thanksgiving in Jamaica since this is an American holiday?
Jamaicans celebrate thanksgiving everyday.(smile)
They know how to live well with very little. Sounds simple, but very hard to accomplish.
All of you that have visited JAM, have witnessed the Jam hospitality and warmth of the people. I have not had this happen to me in any other country.
Spain will come a close second place. But Spain is a developed country with a very strong economy. Jamaica is a third world country with an horrible economy. The people are considered poor in wealth but very rich in spirit and friendleness. This is one of the reasons why people keep comming back. Especially the ones that have ventured out of the property.
Thanksgiving is an American celebration. I have had many dinners at Thanksgiving in the USA and enjoyed them all. Honey baked hams company still make the best dinners.
Also, I know we can book excursions thru the hotel, but I would prefer to just hire a driver for the day to take us over to Dunn's and to Dolphin Cove for the day. There would probably be six of us and we would prefer to do our own thing and be more adventuresome vs. being tied to a large group. Would this cost us a fortune to hire a driver for the day? I did this before in Ocho Rios and got to see more of the real Jamaica this way.
This is a very good idea. During the first few days at the sunset, see if you can talk with a few of the drivers. Chose the one that you feel most comfortable with. You have to live with him for 12 hours, so he has to be good.
Stay by the front entrance where all the taxis come to let the passengers get out.
Watch the way that each driver handles the passengers. His mannerisms. His self confidence. This will also help you to choose the right driver.
Driving in Jam is not fun. The driver has to be really good and courtious at the same time. This situation has improved tremendously over the last few years. Drivers are not so arogant behind the wheel anymore. So you the passengers feel safer.
But they drive on the left and there are very few highways. For American visitors, this can take a few days to get used to. Especially when they are waving to everyone, answering the cell phone, driving and talking to you at the same time.
Dont let anybody tell you that a Jam driver is not good. I grew up thereand I know.
We are the best drivers in the world. Oh! I forgot to add that the drivers also have to avoid the potholes in the roads and dodge the chickens, goats, cows and dogs that also share the roads.
Now you know why I think that driving in the USA is the most boooooring thing to do.
